Last winter, it became clear that our extra-large doormat was insufficient to trap all of the water and dirt that got tracked in every time it snowed, and I was continually wiping up excess water from our wood floors. My house is almost 100 years old and the floors are original, and I'm trying to keep them in decent shape. The house isn't set up to have a mudroom and there is no porch or front entry where we can take off shoes outside. I was thinking of buying a larger (4 x 6) indoor/outdoor rug to place under the door mat to extend the portion of the floors that are covered. Will this work to keep the water off my floors? I'm concerned that it could exacerbate the problem by allowing the water to pass through the rug and get trapped between the rug and the floor. Any thoughts or any other suggestions on how to deal with this issue would be appreciated.
