NCRC Special Needs

Anonymous
This is a question for those who have children in the NCRC special needs program. How have you felt your child has done at the school, given how competitive the school is? I love the school but worry that my son could be in over his head among the typically developing students given their exceptional verbal skills, play skills, etc. Any insights would be most appreciated!

My daughter was there 13 years ago and from there she went to Kingsbury. Her years at NCRC were the best years of her education. Every teacher was excellent and the school was so accepting and inclusive of the special needs student and family. They were right on top of her IEP and advocated for her needs. My daughter worked at her rate but had positive peer relationships. The staff , in my opinion , is what makes a great preschool education and their staff was awesome . NCRC has a reputation as an upperclass, very exclusive preschool but they truly had the most knowledgeable and developmentally appropriate preschool program I have ever visited. Even their Rainbow summer camp was perfect. Usually summer camps are somewhat disorganized and crazy but NCRC was professionally staffed and the kids all had wonderful experiences. I have my masters in Early Childhoood Special ED and an undergrad degree in Early Childhood and the stuff I saw at NCRC was amazing. I could never have afforded it if DCPS hadn't placed her there but I always said I would feel terrible if I had another child because I couldn't offer that child the same early childhood program.

My son attended NCRC 7 years ago. He doesn't have special needs, I was worried that he was showing signs of dyslexia -- it runs on both sides of our family. Their speech therapist was extremely knowledgeable and nurturing. She studied him closely and really listened to my concerns. Proved that he didn't have dyslexia just a late talker. My son remembers the names of all of his classroom and resource teachers. We feel so fortunate that he attended, yes I agree it was a wonderful experience.

I have two friends who have sent their daughters, both with special needs, there. Both have loved it and think that their daughters have blossomed there. We actually had our "playdate" interview for our son (also w/ spec needs) there yesterday!
