@what_katie_did I appreciate that your culture may be different, but in Spain you pierce ears when they are babies. She was surrounded by her family and friends. Please do not judge us or entire cultures...it is actually easier to have it done as a baby. It is a beautiful thing for us. You may choose for your own children but do not try to parent our daughter.

No kidding, but the punishment in this case is way out of proportion with the crime. I feel sorry for her and while she shouldn’t have lied, I wonder if she actually hurt anyone - or did this to hurt anyone. And in the scheme of things, there are so many awful humans in the world. Hilaria’s not one of them, regardless of her considerable flaws.

While this story is tantalizing, she’s being bullied and savagely ridiculed for no decent reason.

I dunno, I often see bullies defending their ways in this very manner. What gave her a right?

Who did HB bully? Who did she attack? Who did she proactively hurt? She lied and she’s been caught. She created a fake identity which suggests mental illness. [b]She deserves to be called our for the lies, but the rest of the viciousness and cannibalism on this thread and others is gratuitous and pretty horrifying.

Mental health professional here. I'm not sure everyone who creates a fake identity is necessarily mentally ill. I don't know a lot about this specific case, but if there is a big motive (fame and fortune, winning someone's affection, etc.), I think perfectly sane people can be motivated to exaggerate or lie, especially if they think risk of exposure is very low.

You’re in no position to diagnose her. Some people do suffer from delusions and mental health issues that cause them to create a persona that is not attached to reality. She could be a con artist, but in some level, what was underneath that? We have no idea and to immediately assume she was trying to hurt people, is complete speculation.

PP here. I made no attempt to diagnose her. I'm just commenting on the general assumption that people who lie are necessarily mentally ill, which is not true. Some people with mental disorders lie, and some without any history of mental health problems also lie. I can't think of a mental disorder for which lying/creating fake identities is a symptom (although people with personality disorders, especially antisocial or narcissistic PD, may lie or exaggerate frequently).

Yes, I think the thinking is that it is characterological. Her behavior and words, as it does for all of us, reflects her defenses, which does reflect her level of mental health. She appears to be struggling to own within herself any piece in what has transpired. Typically in a situation like this, some public figures will apologize and many more will apologize for their mistake or a piece of it, however much they may also feel victimized, they don't double down. They have the self awareness and perhaps healthy shame to make it worse, to better read the situation and take in and understand some piece of the criticism. She won’t even fake it or take the advice of the more sane people who must be somewhere in the picture. She's willful. She seems unwilling to learn and she therefore lacks self awareness. This is both a cause and effect of her problems. Both of their unwillingness to learn is my largest issue with them. And it is often found in mentally unwell or personality disordered people.

This didn't happen because of Amy Schumer. Stop scapegoating. It was said in the NY Times article that it was someone who went to school with her. Amy isn't some Hollywood powerhouse who has the time or interest in taking down Alec Baldwin's D list faux Spanish wife. It's also not because everyone's "jealous" of a five-kids-later "mommy body." Hillary lied, it made news.
