I don't understand sodastream's pricing -- please explain!

Everyone who has a sodastream seems to love it. But when I look online (amazon), it looks like a carbonator that makes 60 liters costs about $45 -- so that's about 75 cents a bottle. You can buy a liter of seltzer at any grocery store for 75 cents. So what's the advantage of a sodastream?

i totally agree...along with kerig...those cups of coffee aren't very big and aren't very cheap.

You can control the level of carbonation and flavor with the soda stream.

i don't understnad the pricing you have. we have one, we get a canister that lasts about two months (the big ones) each canister is about $15 at bed bath and beyond. we use it daily so i doubt we pay .75 a bottle.

OP here. Hey thanks, this is what I was hoping to hear! I drink a lot of seltzer and I'd love to find a cheaper way to do it. For some reason on Amazon the carbonators sell for $45 for a 60L one. But I just went and looked at the BBB site, and it looks like you can buy a 130L carbonator for $30 and refill it for $15. So it's closer to 25 cents per bottle. This makes more sense!

Whoops, got that slightly wrong. You can buy it for $50 and refill for $30. But that's still less than a quarter a bottle.

The first time you buy a CO2 cylinder, you will pay a higher price - basically a deposit fee for the cylinder, plus the charge for its contents. After that, if you go trade in an empty for a full, you pay only for the contents.

So what are the best prices people are seeing locally for 130L cylinder trade-ins?

Plus you can use the infamous bed bath and beyond coupons. I just scored the 60L for $10. I think the OP's original price search is for buying the carbonator new. Once you start exchanging the canister the price goes down significantly. And your machine should come with the first canister anyway.

My soda stream came with a small canister, which BB&B accepted as a trade in, and a rebate voucher to purchase a full-size canister. I think I paid $15 for my first 60L canister.

Amazon is the worst place to buy the replacement canisters. Go to BB&B or Target.

Even Kohls and Strosniders have them now. For BBB you can use coupons.

I shop amazon for every every little thing (seriously), but I would never use it to exchange my SS carbonator. You take the old one in and swap it out for a new one. I don't recall the cost, but under $20, definitely.

Ace hardware sells them (and the soda stream units, too).

I go to bb&b and trade in my carbonator for $15. A 20% coupon takes off $4 or I use a $5 off $15 and get some soap or something. It works out and I don't have to lug and recycle. I do have two carbonators so I don't have to run to the store immediately when empty

You can also trade I at target and staples and many other places. I just have a bb&b handy to work and the coupons make it a done deal for me
