Emergency fund

Ours is 60k and sitting in a savings account right now. Where do you keep yours--savings account, cd, mutual funds outside of an IRA?

We used to have about 90k in savings but I felt like it was too much and unnecessary. So I've made more mutual fund investments so now our mutual fund in cash is about $50k instead. I am comfortable with this because if we need more money we can always sell some of our investments (about $180k).

We have $20k in a wall safe behind a picture hanging in the basement. It's enough for all of us to get to Canada.

If you have other taxable accounts you don't need as much of an emergency fund. I have about 3 months' expenses in cash, another 3 months' in iBonds, and a large taxable fund.

We keep most of it in a mutual fund. I can't just let large sums of cash sit in a bank account. We have enough cash to tie us over to sell some investments if need be.
