Not sure if such a camp exists, but we're interested in a nature/outdoor-focused 1/2 day camp that would be fun and safe for a boy who will turn 3 in June. Prefer McLean/Vienna/N. Arl/ or even NW DC. We're optimistic our son will be fully toilet-trained by June; however, if we do enroll him in a camp, I would prefer it to be a place geared to younger kids (e.g., okay if children wear pull-ups, remind kids to use toilet, etc.) And, I actually would prefer a camp that doesn't have swimming (at least for the 3 year olds). Any ideas? |
Green Hedges in Vienna has a program for 3 - 6yr olds |
I think there is a half day program at Country Day in McLean that ature focused. |
Sorry- nature focused |
Little Langley has a 3's class too. They do a lot of art projects and have water play once a week, but no swimming. I think the cut-off date for the 3's class is in June sometime. My little one is barely squeaking in with a late May birthday. I hope he's PT by then, but I know they are used to occassional accidents and I think they can help with pants if needed - I know we always sent in changes of clothes just in case. Its half-day M-F and you enroll by the week. My older one had a great time there last year. |
Thanks, all. Unless I'm mistaken, we would miss the cutoff at Langley and I believe the website said children must be potty-trained/no pull-ups. We're considering Country Day - the sessions are 3-weeks for 4 morning or afternoons, but I want to consider other options before committing $ to reserve a spot. I believe Country Day is tolerant of toddlers who are working on potty-training and still wearing pull-ups, so that would work for us. And, although they have a pool, I do not think the littlest campers (3's) do swimming. Not sure if anyone knows, but do school-based summer camps generally attract a mix of kids who do not all attend the preschool during the school year? I will look at info on Green Hedges although, if that's the school I'm thinking of (near Wolf Trap?), it may be a little far to drive. Thanks again! It's odd to be thinking of summer camp as I gaze at the beautiful snow falling outside my window... |
I'm the Langley poster. They don't allow pull-ups there - PT is required.
Green Hedges is off of Nutley Street near 123. The one near Wolf Trap you may be thinking of is Town & Country - its on Route 7. |
If you're willing to drive to Fairfax, Providence Nursery School has a program that meets all of your criteria.

Kinhaven in Ballston has a summer program-I think it is a half day program for that age group 4 days a week. They don't have to be potty trained. http://www.kinhaven.com/ Early Years Pre-School in North Arlington (Cherrydale) has a summer program that does not appear to require that the child be potty trained. http://www.earlyyearspreschool.org/ |
Dolley Madison preschool in McLean has a summer camp program for 3 year olds, 4 mornings a week for 4 weeks. Not sure what the PT situation is but don;t see anything on their summer camp info about this, but best to check directly. |
Kinhaven has some sessions that look to be nature oriented
Session I: June 22 - July 9 (three weeks) Going Buggy Insects, arachnids, creepy crawlies, and winged things are the centerpiece of Session I. Habitats, physiology, and life cycles will be considered from both a scientific and artistic perspective. Tuition: $355. Session II: July 13 - July 30 (three weeks) Water, Water, Everywhere For many, summer isn’t the same without water sports such as swimming, boating, fishing, and more. Join us as we explore water, the plants and animals within it, and the variety of ways humans interact with water. From rivers, lakes, and oceans, to the tap, Session II will be a gusher; students are sure to leave with an increased awareness of this valued resource! Tuition: $355. |
The JCCNV camp has a 1/2 day option for 3s without any potty training requirement. There's a 3 day or 5 day option. |
OP here again. Thanks for your ideas. Still not sure what we'll do, but at least now I have some options to research. I really would like an active, outdoorsy camp, as opposed to a summer preschool session where the children may be inside for most of the morning. |
