Credit Report deliquency - is there anything that can be done here?

Anonymous
Several months ago I signed up for auto billing with Macy's. Today, I learned that Macy's has placed a delinquency notice on my account for non-payment. It turns out that Macy's (or so customer service claims) cancels you auto payment enrollment completely if you have a $0 for one month, which apparently I did in March. So auto billing was cancelled and unbeknownst to me, my account was not paid (my Macy's account is rarely more than $25 balance either way).

I immediately paid that balance in full by phone but Macy's refuses to remove the delinquency. They claim I should have known auto billing was cancelled if you balance goes to $0 for a month and that it was my responsibility to re-enroll every time that happens.

I have read the auto billing terms and conditions and neither state that auto billing is cancelled if you have a $0 balance for one month. I have disputed it with Macy's and am awaiting the results but I am concerned they will not remove it. Do I have any other options after that point?

OP here - sorry for typos - I didn't proof read. To be clear, the deliquency is on my credit report, not just my Macy's account.

No advice but that has got to be one of the dumbest policies I've seen.

Dispute it with the credit agencies.

Contact the Better Business Bureau, too.

There are credit repair agencies who will tackle these types of problems for you too

Thanks- I wrote the BBB and will dispute the delinquency through the credit reporting agencies as well. Not sure about the credit repair places - aren't those usually an unnecessary scam?

It very frustrating because I have close to perfect credit and never had a blemish on my CR. Now I have this deiquebcy and we are supposed to start house hunting in 6-12 months.

When Macy's turned off auto-billing (and auto-pay I presume?) did they send you paper bills and paper notices? Like a pp said, what a terrible policy. What the f?

File a complaint with the cfpb.

This was a long time ago, but when we were first househunting, I had an old bad report from one credit card. Our loan officer suggested that I write a letter to all three credit bureaus detailing what happened, and it was removed.

Only time I ever had a problem with Macy's, I got a supervisor on the phone and cancelled my account. Problem resolved immediately. Thanks for the warning on the auto pay.

No, there was no notification that it was cancelled. The thing I got was a letter last night from Macys notifying me that the account was past due, which I already knew because the alert showed up on my CR (I have the Target CR monitoring service). I also finally received a statement last night in the mail, but that is the first statement I have seen since I set up auto billing/autoayments. Neither of those documents stated auto payments were cancelled.

This is why you never do auto-billing/auto-pay.
