Oh I can and have one. I also have a beater. No one says you can’t have both. |
So you go to the dealership to buy your car and then spend your time assessing other people as "LMC fakers" when 1. you have no idea who they are and what their income is 2. even if they are LMC (the horror!!) they are buying/leasing a car they are qualified to buy? That really does not say anything good about you. |
It’s obvious if you’ve ever had to spend time at a dealership waiting for your car. They have absolute freak outs over unexpected repair costs. The tires have too little tread or have cheap tires or major damage that could rise to a safety issue that hasn’t been fixed. I thought this forum was for our inner thoughts since I can’t say this out loud. I absolutely judge these people for their poor financial choices. |
Does not seem credible considering nobody needs to replace tires at the dealership. Everyone with a "LMC" income would know this and would not do this type of work there. You're probably seeing wealthy people who can't be bothered to go elsewhere and are haggling for a better than not great price. |
I don't know why you would assume someone freaking out over an unexpected repair cost is "LMC"? Plenty of wealthy people despise feeling shafted on even small costs. |

it comes from cope
your real loss is from depreciation and opportunity cost of capital. if you drive a landcruiser or lexus GX/LX the depreciation will be very minimal (especially the older v8s). some of the sports cars have actually appreciated if you know what you are doing. for your commuter beater car a tesla 3 is fine for what it is. |
Sadly this is true, my high income frugal DH can’t stand things like this and always shops around/makes triple sure he’s getting the best deal. It’s not worth his time but he won’t listen. |
| We are in a modern Gilded Age. NASDAQ, Dow, and S&P 500 are at record highs. The rich are richer than ever. And as a result, American culture has become much more outwardly showy and materialistic. |
| Low-key rich drive something like a new $85,000 Mercedes wagon, they wouldn't be caught dead driving some old POS. This humble multi-millionaire bullsh*t is created by chronically online proles on reddit and message boards. |
Ahh, the prole comment. Love love love the parochial snobbery of the dcurbanmom crowd. FYI, multi millionaires in old cars are a thing. Dear old dad drives a 27 year old Chevy. Mainly I think to irritate the neighbors. Who are easily irritated. The neighbors drive jags. The neighbors also have mortgages. |
Np - your comment is just as snobby if not more so… |
| The vast majority of MC folks become rich (ok, not crazy rich) by being disciplined with their finances. I used to work with guys driving fancy euro cars and big ass trucks. Every single one of them doesn't have a pot to piss in. So once you achieve financial independence by being frugal you just can't flip a switch and become a big spender. And some people end up falling in love with their beater, kind of like an old rescue dog that bites you once in a while. |
| At my first job out of college, there was this guy just two years ahead of me who drove a leased BMW 3 seres that he talked about constantly. And every pay period, without fail, he would complain about being out of money for groceries until the next pay cycle. I’ll never forget that. |
| Tucker Carlson is a wasp as it gets. I saw him driving a new Volvo XC90 when he still lived in NW DC. |
| Just one more way he’s not representative of most WASPs |
