This is the first year in a long time, that I feel comfortable wearing shorts, after losing some weight. I'm about 5'3", and mostly a size 6 (occasionally a size 4). I'm smaller in the waist, and considerably thicker in the thighs (I have some strong-ass legs!). I have a moderate butt thanks to squats, but nothing outrageous-not flat either.
I have no idea where to start, after never buying shorts for years. What length is good for someone with my height & size? What style hem? What else? |
| Just wear pants. Unless you are tall and thin, it just never looks right. Most tend to look frumpy. |
Please ignore this loser. Just go out and try on some different styles and see what you feel good in. Congrats to you on your weight loss and new found confidence! |

I read somewhere that people who are on the short side should wear skirts and shorts above the knee because showing more than half of your legs will elongate the leg. Also, shorter people can usually get away with wearing shorter hemline.
|
| Shorter people should wear shorter shorts. Not the long ones. Wearing long shorts with shorter legs will make you from a distance look like you have dwarfism. Seriously. But shorter shorts (relative to average population ) will make you look proportional. |
| just wear short shorts (like the commercial jingle...) |
| Knee length shorts may work. |
Who can stand to wear pants when it's freakin' 90 degrees outside? Seriously? |
| I am your size and height and I wear 4" shorts. Most come from Loft and Gap. Longer length shorts look terrible on me and make me look very stocky. |
NO WAY. I'm 5'1 and if I wore knee length shorts I would look like my legs were about 2 inches long. If OP has big thighs it would look really bad. She needs to go short- as short as she's comfortable with but NOWHERE NEAR her knees. |
Agree |
| Hey OP! I responded earlier in this thread. I have a tough time too but finally found the perfect shorts- J Crew City fit. They have a 3" inseam and fall at just the right spot. I have chinos and oxfords. Found them for only $15 a pair at the Leesburg outlets and bought every color they had in my size. (Bonus for petite women- these are 00 and unlike vanity sized 0 or 00s, they actually don't fall off you. Lookin at you Ann Taylor LOFT with your 00s that fit like 4s.) |
Another vote for jcrew city fit. I love love love these shorts. I actually think that the factory stores have better selection this year of the city fit. I found a pair in chambray and polka dot. They are tts, I'm 27 in designer jeans and wear 4 in these. |
| i'm 5'1" and I have to wear 3" or 4" inseams at most. Anything longer makes me look short and stumpy. I dn't love my thighs (also on the larger size, though I'm pretty muscular), but I can't cover them up wtih long shorts because, again, they make me look squat and stumpy. I like the JCrew shorts, but I've found that Loft shorts are similar cut but are slightly wider in the leg opening, which flatters my size legs better. |
I'm this PP. Forgot to mention that JCrew and Loft shorts are vanity sized, so I wear a 0-2 in both, whereas I'm usually a 4 and I wear size 27/28 jeans. |
