Why was the pilot’s name ever kept secret, beyond notifying next of kin? |
It wasn't. The name was released within days. Shame on the media for creating false speculation. |
They should never have been there. The military needs to find a different path to travel. |
Did you not see the news this afternoon of the two planes clipping each other at DCA?

NYT published a comprehensive investigation

“ But one error did not cause the worst domestic crash in the United States in nearly a quarter-century. Modern aviation is designed to have redundancies and safeguards that prevent a misstep, or even several missteps, from being catastrophic. On Jan. 29, that system collapsed, a New York Times investigation found.
Up to now, attention has focused on the Black Hawk’s altitude, which was too high and placed it directly in the jet’s landing path. But The Times uncovered new details showing that the failures were far more complex than previously understood.” |
Read "How Complex Systems Fail" |
I read the entire article this morning. While it does mention contributing factors that might have saved this particular plane, it still basically lays it all at the feet of the Black Hawk. |
Black Hawk pilot. |
It really wasn't far more complex. There were other factors but it still came down to poor navigation and not following instructions on the part of the Blackhawk pilot. It wasn't a control tower issue or lack of onboard equipment. Those routes and altitude restrictions are well established, charted, and those pilots knew them regardless of any clearance they were given. They simply didn't follow them. |
It sounds from the article that the air traffic controller bears some responsibility along with some problems with the system. If the air traffic controller reacted a little more quickly, could either plane reversed course? Maybe yes, maybe no. Air traffic controllers are overworked and understaffed. The Trump administration will only worsen the problem. |
THE pilot, you mean. The pilot who was given instruction by ATC and the co-pilot but who did not respond re: course or altitude and who flew right into a jetliner. |

According to this article, the co-pilot is heard telling her 15 sec before the crash that air traffic control wants them to turn left toward the east river bank- and the pilot ignored these instructions |
It was released well after next of kin knew and they actually told/asked govt not to release it when they released the names of the others, they needed more time. Likely to scrub her internet presence so they could control her legacy and the narration as they wanted it |
