Kids With Special Needs and Disabilities
We are looking for preschools in Arlington/Mclean or NW DC that would be good for our son. He will be three and a half in the fall and we believe that he has a speech delay. We are going to have him evaluated as soon as possible but also want to start applying to preschools for him. Any thoughts would be welcomed.
Check with the school system and see about getting him into one of the Pre-K special needs programs. My son's been in pre-k for two years (!) and it's been a dramatic improvement.
Meant to add that my son's in Arlington.
This is not the area you are looking for, but UofMd in College Park has a preschool for children with speech delays. It is taught by students getting MA in Speech Pathology and an instructor. It has an incredible staff to student ratio, and the kids get speech each day. It's the only school I found that is strictly for students with SPEECH problems, but otherwise developmentally on target. I can't say enough good things about this wonderful treasure.
NCRC in Cleveland Park is very good for kids with language issues.
Dolley Madison Preschool in McLean has a speech program.
The River School in NW DC has a speech therapist in every class.
St Columba's
The River School has children with hearing issues and otherwise wants the hearing children to be very verbal so it would not be a good choice for a hearing child with speech delay.

If you are actually in the District, check out Bridges PCS:
http://bridgespcs.org/ Your DC can get speech, OT, PT, etc. on site, and there is no cost. It's a lovely little school, focused only on pre-schoolers though (ages 3-5). |
Temple Rodef Shalom in Falls Church is starting a program next Fall to include Speech Therapy in its Preschool.

It is probably a little late to respond, but Dolley Madison has a fabulous integrated preschool program where several students per class get speech therapy both in and outside the classroom. My son is one of the speech delayed kids in his class and he loves it there! NCRC's program is supposed to be incredible as well! |
