Cross country move - how soon do I have to hire movers

We are doing a cross country move of a 4 bedroom house and taking the majority of things with us and moving into a larger house. We definitely need movers and likely we will need them to pack us or partial pack (do they do that?). I haven't contacted movers yet because we have a TON of furniture in the unfinished section of our basement and so I think it would be difficult for us to get quotes until we have purged... BUT I am also getting nervous that we may be interviewing movers late in the game. We are about to settle on who we will select as our agent and then we know the real purging process will begin, but wanted some advice from BTDT folks.
