What's your "number"?

This q is for working people only ... please no sidetracking observations from the trust fund crew. What's the total net worth target you're aiming for or which would satisfy your savings goal and cause you to retire? What are you hoping to cover with that number?

My number is $6mm. Hope to cover three kids' college. Retirement for DS and myself. Vacation home ideally. Would like to pass on a few hundred thousand per kid.

$10mm to $12mm.

No less than $10MM which would cover retirement, college for 3 children, trusts for the kids, charitable giving and a boatload of travel.

Same. We actually discuss this all the time in my family, cousins and siblings in our mid to late 40ties/early 50ties. We're Asian, mostly doctors and lawyers.

Sorry to sound dumb but what is the "total net worth target"? Is this your savings (401k and 529s, iras) paid off cars and house equity? How could you possibly save 25 million? Or even 10million?

Same here. We've got 20 years until retirement so many years of saving.

Not OP, but yes, this would be my assumption.

5-6 million is our plan. Hoping to retire before 60. All depends on what the market does in the next 10-12 years.
