Are they REALLY 5x better than the store brand, and with the price tag reflecting that? Should one pot of homemade tomato sauce really cost almost $10?
If I had to quantify it, I would not say FIVE times better. maybe twice as good. They are tasty. And less acidic. I only buy it when I see it cheap/on sale.
I think they are worth it
I got some fresh baby San Marzano tomatoes the other day--tasty!
So worth the price!

I buy them all the time. Well worth it for things where the tomato sauce is a dominant flavor. I make huge batches of Marinara and Bolognese sauces and freeze them for quick week night dinners and wouldn't use any other canned tomato for those. If I'm making a stew or soup, where tomato is secondary and part of a ton of ingredients, I don't use them. We also cook a lot of Indian and I don't use San Marzanos for that - only Italian.

yes, btu only when it has the "imported from italy" label.
Yes!! Totally worth it. I was a non-believer but now I will buy no other.
|
Oh yes. We put a can of them in the food processor to use as our pizza sauce. No other ingredients needed.
Also, there is a NY Times recipe that uses them - "marinara worth mastering" I think it is called. Best marinara sauce I have ever made. |
They are better. When on sale, I stock up.
