Why Was the Song, What If God Was One of Us Offensive?

I loved this song, but some were offended by it. Googled it, but apparently I'm the only one still thinking about it. Do you know?

I don't find it offensive.

Because to a certain brand of (usually right wing) Christian, any reference to God that doesn't fit their parameters is by definition Heresy/Sacrilege/Blasphemy/etc.

Maybe people were offended that she was saying God was ordinary? I don't know, but coincidentally just heard it this morning on Sirius after not having heard it for a long time.

Because it refers to God as "a poor slob on the bus" like "one of us." (I have no problem with that. I think we should look at others that way.)

OP here, I thought it was great because it encourages compassion for others-i.e. treat the stranger on the bus as nicely as you would treat God.
