My DH and I are finally going on a solo vacation and I would love some great book recommendations. Some books I have read recently and loved include The Secret History, The Orphan Master's Son, Americanah, and The Circle. Would love to hear your suggestions, thanks! |
The goldfinch. |
Thanks read The Goldfinch and loved it. Would be great to find another long read for the trip, |
I liked Reamde-- great for a long, readable but not trashy book-- but I don't recognize some of your books so maybe our tastes are different. |
Night Film is creepy, but really good. |
I never heard of any of those books.
But I suggest the Spellman Chronicles (it's a series) and anything by Faye Kellerman. |
I am reading Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet and finding it wonderful. I loved Goldfinch and Secret History.
Also Amor Towles' Rules of Civility - fabulous book. The Golem and the Jinni was good. The Ocean at the End of the Lane is quick but stunning. |
Life After Life
Rustication The Luminaries Beautiful Ruins The Historian Sea of Poppies Jamrach's Menagerie Prayers for the Stolen Seconds to previous recs: Reamde Rules of Civility The Ocean at the End of the Lane |
I just finished "A Circle of Wives" and "Turn of Mind" by Alice LaPlante. Excellent. Also loved "The Mapmaker's War" by Ronlyn Domingue. Recommend "The Hypnotist's Love Story" by Liane Moriarity was good, but I hated "The Husband's Letter". Am also enjoying "The Natural History of Dragons" and "Tropic of Serpents" by Marie Brennan. |
A Fine Balance-- a Dickensian novel set in India, reminded me a bit of Orphan Master's Son.
Game of Thrones-- the novels are great. Each one is 1000 pages so the whole series lasts a really long time. |
Middlesex
Arcadia The Paris Wife Sisterland |
Thinking of reading The Book Thief or that popular nearly-movie one that's one word and starts with D but I can't remember the name at the moment!
Anyone read these? |
Divergent is pretty bad. The Book Thief is good but keep in mind it's a middle grade young adult book. |
Divergent. It's bad, but the sequels are even worse. |
No wonder the movie sucked. DH informed me on the way to see Divergent that it was adapted from a YA novel, but the tickets were already purchased so we saw it anyway. Not much substance there. |
