Support groups?

Anonymous
I have a mentally ill family member and I would like to find a support group in the DC area for family members of mentally ill people. I have reached out to a few and gotten no response, and there appear to be some that combine both the mentally ill person and family members, which I do not want. Honestly, I would just like to meet with people and trade advice on how to deal with the situation. I also wonder if there are groups that focus on certain mental illnesses. For example, my family member has borderline personality disorder, which I think has different issues than someone with depression. Any suggestions appreciated! Thanks.

Go to the NAMI website. There are links there for local support groups in the area.

Thanks - I actually emailed NAMI to make sure the support group was still meeting and received no response, which I thought was odd. Maybe I will send another email.

For several of the support groups, you can just show up. I know the one in Oakton it still active.

This looks like it's an on line support group, but there is also a map with markers for what looks like local organizations, possibly in this area. By joining you might be able to inquire with others that have a bpd person in their family about DC metro options.

Also, you might look into Pat Harvey on this link. I think it's more training for families than an actual support group and costs dollars, but it wouldn't hurt to call her.
