Just because something happened at MCPS does not mean MCPS is at fault. There is so much speculation and reaction to the speculation.

Why would you even think to defend MCPS!? They are the defacto guardian while children are at school. You would question a babysitter or daycare provider wouldn’t you? 💯 they are liable and must be held accountable. How many of these incidents do we NOT know of? That’s more concerning.
+1 In Loco Parentis is a legal principle that establishes the duty of care a school owes children under their supervision. The term is Latin for “in place of a parent”. So yes, OSMS was the de facto parent for Lenny and he nearly lost his life while under their care. A seven figure lawsuit will send a strong message to all of MCPS: Step up and do your job. Another poster said this, and I agree, it could have happened to any of our kids.

Maybe he wouldn’t have bullied a child to their final act. Yeahs it looks cool to represent the victim but he was the bully in the first place. No one wants to talk about that. (Did she handle it in the wrong way- absolutely) but he’s not innocent.

This is a special needs. He didn't have the level of awareness other his age may have. However, if there was supervision, all of this could have been prevented. He should have been redirected or removed from the situation. When the kids started chasing him, a teacher or security guard should have been right behind them to defuse the situation.

There is no excuse for throwing a metal object at another child, especially in the head, which now has possible life long consequences.

Stop using special needs as an excuse for bad behavior. Not speaking about Lenny specifically, but I have witnessed a number of "special needs" students who absolutely were the aggressors and knew what they were doing. Special needs can cover such a range these days. The kids I knew absolutely should have been punished when they were the aggressor and not gotten off lightly because they were "special needs" and a "victim".

The clarification actually makes a difference. It’s not an excuse - but was this a manifestation of his disability?

That is a question that will be asked. What also will be asked if there was a history of this behavior by either party, when and how was it addressed?

All these variables play into how this is handled and what legal repercussions MCPS face. They have a duty to ensure a safe environment and by not addressing issues, they failed.

DP

I don't know what special needs are at play in this incident. I have a child with autism. Her behavior issues typically fall into two buckets:
- She is dysregulated and out of control and responds with aggression. She knows she isn't supposed to hit and she is able to stop herself sometimes, but other times she is completely out of control. In these cases she needs to be separated from others and let the meltdown run its course.
- She is doing something not intended to be aggressive, but she can't anticipate how it will impact others (e.g. she decides it is time to clean up so she knocks over someone else's tower and they get upset). Then when she is told not to do that or that something wasn't nice, she cries because she had no idea she was causing harm. To prevent these incidents, she needs explicit instruction about various social rules around other kids' toys/body boundaries/etc.

What works the absolute best for her is not punishment (not against punishment, it just isn't very effective for her and frankly negative consequences have limited effectiveness for most people) but positive reinforcement of good behaviors and supports to prevent dysregulation before it happens.

What a bizarre comment. Just because you find something distasteful doesn't make it ok for you to anonymously bash the mother of a child with a brain injury. WTAF is wrong with you?

This is a child who literally couldn't consent to getting this picture posted on the internet, let alone while his mother is holding out her hand asking for money.

So only parents who ask for money can't plaster the internet with photos of their kid? GMAFB

The mom did not hold out her hand for money. The community asked how they could help support her financially. The go fund me was created in response to the community wanting to help. When you're sitting by your childs bed in the hospital, money helps for things like feeding you from the cafeteria, paying for sitters for the kids at home, and affording take out for those kids at home with the sitter.

It’s not disgusting, she’s asking for help and showing the reason for her needing the help. Her medical bills could be through the roof.

Sure....why not post a picture of him smiling and happy? I'd be mortified if my mom posted an intimate picture like this when I was a kid.
