Bethany is "fine" but still disappointing. Expected more from her.
I don't know why people think it's more complicated and that there must be a lot of behind-the-scenes dirt. All it takes in Arlington is to question or not vote in block to put you out of step and out of favor.

Every Board has behind the scenes drama. Every 👏 single 👏 one. This one decided to air their dirty laundry in public. It’s not a great look.

There have been renegades on the sb before. Reid Goldstein voted against many Syphax-backed proposals. But nothing like putting a woman in her place.

It was gross. But I do think there’s more there. There has to be. Both CDT and DP wouldn’t have outted themselves to the community otherwise. They’re smarter than that. Even Bethany and Francisco childed her, but their words were more temperate.

ha ha ha!
"Francisco" should keep his mouth shut. He works for HER. SHE is part of the team that hires him/renews his contract. If the superintendent is chiding a school board member, that only reinforces the problem is the unwritten rule that all board members must align with what the superintendent says and Mary's "fault" is that she asks questions and doesn't follow lock-step. Quite bold for Duran to make negative comments about or insinuations targeting any board member. He needs to go.

You don't have to put his name in quotes. It's his name. Although I dare you to be so informal to his face.

I listened to the SB meeting online too. Bethany's and Dr Duran's speeches were more about "staying the course" and not calling out Mary personally. But the implication was there.

Dr Duran and the end of his speech did say something about "staying the course". I think he repeated himself twice. I didn't think twice about it at the time, but now I can see how people can interpret it to target Mary, asking her not to rock the boat. Particularly around the CIP decision.

Wait, now it all makes sense. She’s going to use her role as chair to change the CIP? What’s her plan?

I wonder if Mary's the kind of person who is just too nice. The easy one to pick on and bully. I see this dynamic all the time in Arlington with parents, but didn't expect the SB to sink to this level.

That's the only reason why the rest of the board would deny her the chairpersonship right? Everyone's concerned that their legacy project can be altered. The chair does have a lot of power in agenda setting and what comes up for a vote.

I don't know if she even has a plan, I don't think she is actually that kind of person, but she has voted against the CIP citing numerous concerns.

I'm coming into this drama somewhat uninformed having not followed everything closely. Based on this thread I just watched the recent SB meeting. Holy hell, I can't decide which speech was more disgusting - Priddy or CDT. I know I'm not adding anything new to this thread, but just....wow.

The CIP was terrible anyway. If Mary wants to tear it all down, she'd have my support.

I don’t think it’s the only reason but people are definitely reacting differently depending on who they support. Mary’s friends are going after everyone else. She has a lot of APE supporters and they’re slash and burners

I did catch how many APE people support her. I read the thread from the beginning again yesterday and it does feel that Mary supporters are overly aggressive. While I'm okay with her being chair and glad that CDT and DP didn't get their way, all of this fangirldom towards her is kind of suspect. She's doing her dog damn JOB. And she has voted with the others more than she has bucked the system. She's not your savior. Maybe she has too many "insiders" who think they will gain all of this access because of her. How ridiculous.

Wow. All the "stick with the plan" comments make more sense now.

+1. School board meetings should be entertaining for the next 6 months, as now there are definite camps with Bethany being the tiebreaker.

Get the popcorn ready!

I'm personally a big Mary supporter because not only does she respond to messages she follows up. I've emailed several of the others and don't get a response or just a canned answer. FWIW I usually only contact her for staff-based issues.

Agreed she is doing her job well, but it's still her job to respond to the community. She does respond not all, but most of my emails too.

Maybe the other SB members and especially the new ones will step up too.

This was one of the Priddy's criticisms. Indicated she does too much as a liaison or something. Not sure what he thinks the job is or isn't, but responding to constituents and trying to resolve problems seems like the job. That plus oversight. Which requires asking questions.

Didn't Mary say that part of her plan for this year is to actually balance the School Board budget, which maybe would be a big deal? Maybe would cut programs?

I don't know if she even has a plan, I don't think she is actually that kind of person, but she has voted against the CIP citing numerous concerns.

Have you ever engaged with the school board? Mary follows up with people who speak at school board meetings, she thanks them (even if she disagrees), she pays attention and makes eye contact. Other board members ignore speakers or emails, and are generally rude. I am not an insider or APE, but in my limited experience she’s just a better human.

That's the only reason why the rest of the board would deny her the chairpersonship right? Everyone's concerned that their legacy project can be altered. The chair does have a lot of power in agenda setting and what comes up for a vote.

I don't know if she even has a plan, I don't think she is actually that kind of person, but she has voted against the CIP citing numerous concerns.

I have engaged with all school board members. Mary is the most approachable for sure, but Bethany and Reid - I miss him- are quite engaging too. Cristina and David are nice in person, but yes, don’t respond to emails. Miranda just works for APE, so I pretty much ignore her. Her priorities don’t align with mine, and that’s fine.
