High School Grading Policy

I am new to the area and DC is in high school (10th). Please explain semester grades: in a year long class, like English does she get a two semester grades and then both semesters are averaged to get a final grade? What about 1/2 credit courses? Also do Algebra I and Geometry count as a high school grade and credit if taken in middle school.

The classes will have two different numbers (English 9a/9b) and she will receive two grades. They are not averaged together (it is like college). Algebra 1 and Gemometry do count as HS classes..but I am not sure aobou it if you were not in MoCo for them.

We moved from out of state so I should ask about her middle school courses. Do A/B semesters have the same teacher? I am guessing g not..

No they do not necessarily have the same teacher each semester for different portions of the same class.

My DC moved from private to public in 9th and his middle school classes like algebra aren't on his transcript.

If you are in Montgomery County you should be aware of some other policies related to grading.

If a student makes some effort but gets below a 50% the grade is raised to a 50%. Some teachers/schools to avoid determining what is good faith give all grades below 50% half credit.

In high schools students can fail a class and never retake it to get credit. The policy is called credit recovery.

There is still an attendance policy, but it's nearly impossible for students to fail a class due to lack of attendance.
