Wooden slats on upper bunk bed: does the ribbon go up or down?

I'd assume the ribbon goes down for (some) additional support. Does it matter?

I don't think it matters. Whichever side, just make sure it doesn't fall through. |

| It goes up, closer to the top mattress. Support for the mattress as it's directly under it. |

| I always put the ribbon closer to the top mattress so the kid in the bottom bunk can't pull it off. |
