Where did your child go after HGC?

If your child applied to HGC, went and graduated -- where did s/he do middle school and high school? Did she regret not staying at her home school?

Neighborhood middle school. We're in Bethesda so commuting halfway across the county was not really something our child (or, quite frankly, we) wanted to do.

My child returned to our home school as did her group of friends from our home elementary school. None choose to apply anywhere else. Location was a big factor. The 5th grade experience was not quite as good as 4th so they were not incredibly enthusiastic on the magnets at decision making time. There is no perfect answer. Many kids go on to the magnet middles. They are fine at the home school..not quite as challenged but they all sort of make there own with extra curriculars etc. We were lucky to have the peer group at our home school.

Magnet middle school, and then Magnet HS.

If they end up back at home school for middle school and beyond, would you still choose HGC?

+1

No regrets here. It has been wonderful for DC.

Ditto. And as to whether we would still choose the HGC, definitely--it was just what our child needed for 4th and 5th grades.

Magnet MS, not in HS yet but we'll likely apply. No regrets although the commute is hard.

Same here. We're up near Olney and the commute would have been close to 1:45 each way.

Mine will go to our neighborhood middle school (Pyle) next year. We didn't look at the magnet options because of the distance. Like so many other posters, it was just too far!

My older 2 went to HGC, 1 went on to Magnet middle (and just got into Magnet HS), the other went back to home Middle. Both fine, home middle not as challenging, but magnet middle - who loves it, does have a lot more work. Will apply to HGC with my next one next year, but I hear they are not as good as they were due to 2.0....

When everyone refers to "Magnet MS" does that refer to the middle school highly gifted centers? Or does that include the middle school consortium magnets?

There is no such thing as a "middle school highly gifted center." There are two competitive-entry magnets: Takoma Park Middle Math/Science/Computer Science, and Eastern Middle School Humanities.

My child went to the TPMS magnet.

There actually is such a thing as a middle school highly gifted center. There is one set for the downcounty (Takoma Park MS for math/science/computers and Eastern MS for humanities) and one set for the upcounty (both at Roberto Clemente MS).
