curtains and blinds

Anonymous
We need to find some linen or cotton curtains that provide some privacy as well as shades/blinds for different rooms. I made an appt with Smith and Noble. Can anyone recommend any other places who could do an at home consultation and installaton? I wonder if pottery barn or restoration hardware does in-home consultations. Thanks for any advice!

Why don't you call those stores and find out?

I bought plain but nice cotton curtains at Ikea (you can also find online) and shades you can do next day blinds or similar.

We always do customs from Calico Corners. They also make matching/coordinating pillows and chair covers. I think they have the best fabric selection.

No matter what you choose, get the seamstresses to put black out materials in the lining.

Thanks for the suggestion re: seamstress and black-out material. I am afraid to do ikea b/c we have weirdly shaped windows. Also, has anyone ever just gone to a tailor and brought fabric? Any suggestions for great tailors? Thx!

A tailor and bought fabric??

I'm the PP who loves Calico Corners. Calico Corners, JoAnns and fabric.com are all great places to buy fabric. You can easily sew curtains yourself. Just make sure they "kiss" the floor and aren't too short. Also, always line curtains. If gives them a much richer hang and look. Most store bought curtains aren't lined and I think are cheap. I really love silk curtains for bedrooms and living rooms. You can make them reasonably.

At g street fabrics, most of the women there will do things like that for you, as a side job.

Also, you want a seamstress not a tailor. Tailors are for clothes.

If you are in Northern VA, try Color Wheel in McLean.
