| We moved to a school that uses MAP testing, and I am new to understanding Lexile scores. My son's results gave a Lexile score of 885, along with a "Lexile independent low" score of 735 and a "Lexile independent high" score of 835. Not sure I get it as this low-high range is below his Lexile score of 885. Anyone with a better understanding I these scores who could help interpret? I'm trying to understand what materials he can or should be reading. His class is currently doing differentiated reading groups and his assigned text has a Lexile score of 720. |

Hi OP,
Here's a chart for ranges: Typical Reader Measures, by Grade Grade Reader Measures, Mid-Year 1 Up to 300L 2 140L to 500L 3 330L to 700L 4 445L to 810L 5 565L to 910L 6 665L to 1000L 7 735L to 1065L 8 805L to 1100L 9 855L to 1165L 10 905L to 1195L 11 and 12 940L to 1210L or here: http://www.cpschools.com/Schools/HMS/SummerReading/LexileConversionChart.pdf Basically it looks like he's in a range of 4th and 5th grade -level texts. His assigned text is early 4th grade-- he could probably handle slightly more difficult material. You can google lexile levels for books and find him stretch books to read at home with you, or some easier stuff just to keep it fun. |

Thanks PP.
Anyone have insight into why his Lexile score would be 885, but the "high" independent number would be less than that? I'm particularly confused by that. |
| Do you have any more information from the test results? I have never heard of "Lexile independent low" or "high". My first guess is that it was just a typo. Perhaps the Lexile High score was meant to be 935? |
The additional info I have is a "RIT score" of 213 and national percentage of 98. My son is 7, in 2nd grade. They did fall testing as well and his Lexile score was right within the low-high range on that report. I'm just trying to understand if this is a data reporting error, or if there is different meaning to the "plain" score versus the low-high scores, or what. Thanks for any and all help! |

213 RIT = Lexile 835 = Lexile range of 735-885 |
| was it handwritten? looks like a score was transposed |
|
Ah, thanks, last two PPs. It looks like the Lexile score and high range numbers were transposed. That makes a lot more sense.
Scores were not handwritten, so it's kind of an odd glitch, but I appreciate now being able to understand it! |
| lexile scores are based on a formula that looks at the length of sentences and words. not always the best measure of complexity so keep that in mind |
Someone probably hand entered the data at some point and transposed it then. I know what you mean, OP, you just want the numbers to make sense! |
| Lexile scores are only one indicator of reading ability. My 14 YO DC has a 12th grade lexile (and has had it for 3 years.) DC has dyslexia and has memorized hundreds of sight words, is a good guesser and has an advanced vocabulary. High lexile score in a testing environment does not mean the child is a automatically a good reader. |
I second this! My 6th grade DD scored 1180 but could NO WAY read books in this range and understand them. Plus she reads really slow, which would make it even more difficult to read books in this range. |
