Timing for SAT prep?

I'm clueless about this since my kids are still in preschool and elementary--we'd like to pay for my nephew to take an SAT prep course through Kaplan. It looks like there isn't any classroom instruction available near where they live (rural Oklahoma), and I doubt his parents would drive him anywhere for a prep class, but there are a few different options for online courses. He is currently a sophomore. Would this summer be a good time to start prepping?
Or are there other SAT prep options to consider? They have an option that includes PSAT prep, should we do that one? |

| If he did well on his sophomore PSAT, prepping the PSAT might be worth it. Otherwise do the prep just before he takes the first test. |

| If he plays school sports we found Aug before junior year good for the long course and a refresher over Christmas break. And then take test Jan or Mach junior year. But there tons of other options too. |
