How many snow days and delays are we up to now in MoCo?

Anonymous
I know we haven't had a full week since December, but I've lost count on the number of delays and closings so far this winter. Does anyone know?

I don't know either, but I'm pretty sure that the weather is Starr's fault. Also, something something 2.0.

(I apologize, OP.)

I think this is the 5th day MCPS has been closed, and that that is all the days that were built into the calendar.

I read in the Wash Post last week that MoCo had one snow day left before it would have to make up the days. So today would be the last "free" snow day. I'm not sure what the number is.

OP here - wow, five already...anyone know about delays? This explains why it feels like the kids have barely gone to school the last few weeks!

This is Day 5 and without an exception, it is scheduled to be made up . . .

(from the MoCo website)
School Contingency Calendar, 2013-2014

If the school year should be disrupted by emergencies and schools are closed, the school year will be extended.
If schools are closed... The school year will be extended by...
5 days one day to June 13, 2014
6 days two days to June 13 and 16, 2014
7 days three days to June 13, 16, and 17, 2014
8 days four days to June 13, 16, 17, and 18, 2014
9 days five days to June 13, 16, 17, 18, and 19, 2014

5th closure. 3rd delay? Already extended the school year one day. Ridiculous.

I think they'll get a waiver/exception from the State. Other states that have had lots of snow have gotten such waivers. I would think MCPS could do the same.
Anonymous
Waivers usually happen when there has been a major snow event where a state of emergency has been declared for the entire state. Not the case this time.

The Post is wrong. Only 4 days are built into the calendar.

I still wait for the day the county figures out how to zone itself or something so the close-in areas don't have to go along with the far-flung areas.

My DC said the teacher said that they could extend each day be 15 minutes instead of adding days at the end of the year. Is that right? I'd love that.
