We're upgrading from a queen to a king and I'm trying to figure out if I should just buy box springs and a headboard and use a bed skirt or look for a platform style bed and skip the box spring altogether. We tend to store seasonal clothing in boxes under our bed, so perhaps the bedskirt is the way to go, but I want something that looks current and more modern/ transitional, not frumpy. Do headboards and bedskirts look too old fashioned or does it depend on the headboard design? I'm considering something square and tufted, sleek metal or a maybe a seagrass per some of the examples below.

I don't think headboards are out of fashion at all. In fact, I can't imagine that they would ever really be out of fashion but I do think bed skirts look a bit dated. I can't remember seeing one in a long time. Maybe it depends on the style? As for the choices of headboard, I like the last one you posted but my preference would generally be wood or if not, something tufted with more modern fabric. |
Not in my house they aren't. |
You can find tailored bed skirts from Company Store, etc. Avoid the pleats - they look dated. |
I like the first headboard but we don't know your decor to even pick one out for you. You could be an eye sore if it doesn't go with the rest of the room. Please, no bedskirt granny. |
OP here - thanks everyone.
If you have a mattress on a boxspring and standard metal bedframe and attach a headboard to it and don't use a bedskirt, do you need to worry about covering the boxspring, or just let the comforter or duvet hang over it? |
You can get a box spring cover if you are not using a bed skirt.
Williams Sonoma home and Restoration hardware sell them usually in a quilted matelasse or to save money just put a fitted sheet over the box spring. a tailored, box pleat bedskirt in a fabric that matches a fabric in the room, whether it's the drapes, upholstered headboard, pillows or other upholstered furniture in the and coordinates with the other colors and fabrics and can look gorgeous and not dated at all. |
I can't say enough good things about the two tufted headboards I've bought from Target over the years. We use box-pleated bedskirts because I hate bed frames of all kinds (beyond the basic metal supports). They stick out beyond the box spring and you conk your shins into them when getting into bed. |
I have mine! I really don't care about outdated -- that's where the plastic bins of family photos are kept. Easy access in case of quick evacuation. |
Agreed. Why people spend a gazillion dollars on a trend is beyond me. They usually are the first ones to complain about money. |
There's a headboard at Homegoods that looks just like your #2 in a blue/gray color for $399. |
Why don't you get a storage bed? I know it is expensive, but a possible long term solution. Covers the modern look and storage issue in one swoop.

Thanks! Which Homegoods? I never even thought about looking there for headboards. |
