Went out back to take out the trash and all of my ceramic white planters I got on sale at Crate & Barrel last summer exploded from the cold temps.
I've lived in the area 38 of my 43 years and this was new to me. |
| Crate and Barrel is not what it used to be. |
| The pots I bought at Johnson's had no such trouble. I'm guessing C&B used cheap material. |
Aren't they all made from clay? |
Quality of clay and firing technique matters a lot. |
| Yes, you're not supposed to leave your ceramic plant pots outside for the winter. |
Duh |
| I've never brought my ceramic pots in before. None of mine have ever broken. |
OP here. Yes. Thank you. That's my frickin' point. 40 years in DC and I've never had outdoor pots explode from cold weather. |
| Gorilla glue. Do not use too much. |
| They must be more porous than the typical clay pot and had held a lot of moisture. |
|
Just buy some more op.
Preferably not from c and b. |
| If they were unfired (not shiny) clay pots and they had any moisture in them they'll crack and fall apart when they freeze and then thaw(water molecules expand as they thaw, the expansion causes the cracking). 5th grade SCIENCE. |
| Do they have drain holes? If not the merited snow expanded when it froze and cracked your pots. |
| Ok OP. It snowed and the pots got moisture in them. Then we had record cold and the water expanded and shattered the pots. Does that make sense? |
