Anyone? I'm not talking mayorga etc. I'm trying to restrict the bulk of my grocery shopping to the new Walmart. We go through a lot of coffee so getting it for $6 a pound versus $12 would add up.
Consumer Reports says 8 o'clock but I disagree. |
| I like Melitta. |

A few years ago, I knew someone who was a trained Chef from Cordeon Bleu. I was over at her house and the coffee was fantastic. She said she'd tried every brand out there and the best was Peet's Major Dickenson's. I've been buying it ever since (the decaf is not so great but the regular is)
Also there is a story there that I can't remember; something like the person who created Major Dickenson's coffee was also the consultant to Starbucks or something like that; anyways, good coffee! |
| I like Cafe Bustelo. |
+1. So good and rich, and bonus is that you don't have to use that much because it's very strong. |
| another vote for Bustello -- Whole Foods store brand is also good. |

Thanks for the recs!!

| Seriously 8 o'clock is pretty darn good. But unless you're grinding (burr grinder only) before brewing, and you've altered your machine to brew at 210 degrees, it doesn't much matter what beans you use. Go with the cheapest. And before you call me a snob, I buy generic beans and grind them in the store for my daily swill. For occasions when I like good coffee, I use Pete's or Swing's and a french press. |
I like Peet's too, but it's pricey! Recently Safeway has had it marked down to $7.99 for 12 oz. Not cheap. The Whole Foods brands are pretty good and reasonably prices. |

Peets is good if you like the super dark roasts (i.e. Starbucks style). Indeed one of the Starbucks founders went off to run Peets for a while, so they share some of the same heritage.
For someone who isn't into the "burnt" taste of the super dark roasts, you may want to try Caribou or Green Mountain. Granted, neither are super cheap either. |
|
You didn't say what you like in a coffee. We like a very dark roast so I buy among the following depending on sales and coupons:
Seattle's Best#5 Gevalia Majestic Bold Lavazza Espresso Goya or Bustelo occasionally Melitta occasionally |
| Peets Major Dickason's or French Roast. They are the only satisfactory K-Cups. |

| Cafe Buselo at Giant is usually $2.50-$3.00 for 10oz (some other grocery stores charge twice that much). |

Didn't OP ask for store brand coffee? Peets is definitely a premium brand. I think she's wondering about good ol' Maxwell House, 8 O'Clock, etc...
What kind of brewer do you have OP? That will make a lot of difference. PP's recommendation of Cafe Bustelo is good but I don't see it sold in bulk too often. 8 O'Clock is up there as is the Folgers Black Silk, if you like darker coffees. |
