Kids in Chevy Chase MD

Anonymous
Hi- we currently live in SS and are looking to buy a larger house in Chevy Chase, MD. After looking for a while, we're beginning to wonder if there are some more and some less child populated neighborhoods?? The homes we're looking at seem to be either empty or inhabited by seniors. Are there pockets of CC with more young families? Thanks for any feedback.

There seem to be many children living within 2 or 3 blocks of Chevy Chase Elementary School.

Yes, it totally depends on the neighborhood. I think a fairly good rule of thumb is that the less expensive the neighborhood, the more likely it is there will be lots of families with young kids. We are in Rock Creek Forest which is probably the cheapest in CC and there are tons of families with young kids.

OP here, thanks PP. We love Rock Creek Forest. Any other pockets in CC with lots of kids out there so we can widen our search?

We just bought in Dunlop Hills on the side near Candy Cane city and there are a lot of seniors, but new families with young ones are slowly moving in as the seniors depart. We love it and the seniors are excited about all the young families coming in.

New poster here- what about Sommerset (technically Bethesda I think) we saw a house there but it looked like everyone in the neighborhood was more grandparent than parent. Thx!

Chevy Chase West (just north of Somerset, south of Bradley, off Wisconsin) has a ton of kids. It's walking distance to downtown Bethesda, Friendship Hts, the Bethesda pool, and fabulous Norwood Park. Somerset elementary.

I think its the most family-friendly neighborhood on the planet.

You'll find more families in East Bethesda, too.

Somerset has lots of kids -- from babes in arms through teens -- but we've also got empty-nesters and childless couples (both straight and gay). We've been here 10 years and the inter-generational community is one of the things we love about it, along with the location, pool, great elementary school, and freedom the kids have to roam the n-hood. Somerset is in Chevy Chase, BTW, but I'm not sure why that matters since Chevy Chase is simply a shared zip code.)

We are in the Town of Chevy Chase. I agree with a previous posted, there is a mix of older families and younger ones with kids. We have quite a few young kids around us.

PP here, I meant previous poster! I should also add that we can walk into Bethesda as well. A great bonus.

We are also in "Dunlop Hills/Rollingwood" about 1/2 mile from Rock Creek Park. When we moved here about 6 years ago our daughter was the only kid at one of three school bus stops on our street but now there are are about 15 for elementary school and an equivalent amount of middle schoolers and high school kids. The public schools are fantastic and we are also close to lots of nice independent schools as well including the French International School which is housed in our former neighborhood school. The bus service is really great and there are also great after school programs in the public elementary schools (Rosemary Hills and Chevy Chase).

The seniors in our community are around during the day and they've helped me with things like meeting my daughter at the bus stop when the baby sitter couldn't make it or we were tied up in traffic. Having Rock Creek Park so close has been great. The community has parties in summer and around Halloween that are lots of fun for adults as well as kids. Being close to Rock Creek Park is wonderful; you can walk to: "dog park", jogging, soccer fields, tennis, baseball, and horse stables where they give riding lessons. Beach Drive is closed to cars on the weekend and holidays... we like cycling so that's great too. Finally from the standpoint of commuting it is an easy drive to the beltway, down Connecticut Ave to DC, or across to the SS metro to park and take metro down to DC.
