My son's tooth fell out tonight while with his dad. He came home all excited and I'm out of gold coins.
Think the grocery store might have them? I know I have gotten them as change at the PO but not sure the ones near me have them anymore now that they have those automated machines. Help! |
You should be able to pay cash at the auto PO machines and maybe you'll get the coins as change.
Or try the supermarket--I'd try asking at customer service and maybe they'd do a check of all the cash drawers for you. Then lay in a stash of them--or better yet, crisp new $2 bills (ask at your bank). |
The grocery store may have them. I get mine at the bank.
Sneaky thought - Do you know where your son keeps his other ones? Take one out and give it back to him and run to the bank in the morning to replace it. |
I'm guessing the bank. I haven't had any in so long. |
Good idea! |
He actually used his last dollars to buy a toy he wanted...already double checked the piggy bank. |
I read recently that the reserve bank (or whoever) is stashing them because they turned out not to be popular. I think they're more or less out of circulation other than the ones people actually have and use. I wish they'd take pennies out of commission. I don't know why they thought dollar coins were a good idea...who wants to walk around with a bunch of heavy coins clinking around in their pocket or purse? I mean seriously. |
The coins last longer than than bills so the Feds were hoping they would catch on in popularity. |
Give him a $1 bill with a note from the tooth fairy. "Sorry____, out of golden dollars, but here's a paper dollar instead. Thanks for the tooth!" |
Can't you get them at the metro? |
I got them at our local Safeway store one night--there weren't any in the register (I bought stuff, didn't just go ask for the coins) but the manager went into the office and found a bunch for me--he even said he tried to get the shiniest ones.

The Target parking lot in Columbia Heights dispenses gold dollar coins as change. |
OP here.
I went to three stores. None of them had it and no one was willing to open any registers. The Safeway folks were the rudest... Post Offices dont have stamp machines anymore...I read they stopped using them in 2010 and those APC's only use credit/debit cards. Oh well. I left him a dollar bill this time and a note. Thanks anyway. |
Well a dollar spends just the same whether it's paper or metal.

That is hard-core commitment, Tooth Fairy! This will be a great story for him when his TF days are over. |
