I want 22 month old DD to have control and indepencence to put her coat and shoes away on her own. she is trying on her own, but our closet is a mess and poorly designed - live in apartment.
looking for a piece of furniture like at day care : open and hook for coats. any idea where to find one and/or what it is called? |
The furniture piece is called a cubbie, but searching for one will likely send you to sites aimed at schools and daycares. My own quick search seems to show it's hard to find them in singles (although this is a double, if you have another kid or might at some point: http://www.nurserymaid.com/cubbie_locker.htm ) Why not just put a hook on the wall at her level and nice looking box on the floor for the rest? |
We just have a Command hook on the wall behind the door at her level. She loves it. We use a basket for her shoes. |
We don't have a spot like that in our apartment but we do ask our kids, 4 and 2, to put their shoes in jacket in the same place every time. Then it is the grownups responsibility for putting them away in the closet. |
Just saw a solution in the January Better Homes and Gardens that was cute. They used a Billy bookcase with doors to create entryway solution (removed a lower shelf). Hooks inside for kid coats and a bin for hats and scarves. Upper shelves for mail, keys, etc, for adults. |
We do same thing with Command hooks inside the door of the front closet. |
Is there a link to what this looks like? So is it just the billy bookcase without the shelves in it? |
Second the command hook. We have an awesome mounted coat rack with adjustable knobs that we got from Ikea but they don't make them anymore. |
I couldn't find it online. It's the January 2014 issue, page 50. "You don't have to be a carpentry pro to make a piece of furniture work the way you want it to. Removing a shelf turned this cookie-cutter cabinet into something unique and even more functional. Billy bookcase with doors $159.99." Looks like the doors are on the bottom half, with no shelf. The top half is open shelving. It looks nice, unfortunately, it wouldn't work in our space because it would block the ventilation intake. |
We do this on the back of a door, just her height. |
We also use the command hooks. We've attached one on the wall below our key/mail shelf and one on a bookcase by the kitchen (for her book bag). |
Pottery Barn. Home Goods. |
I got a coat rack recently that on casa.com that has hooks at different heights, including one DD can reach. Now, to enforce using it! |
