Heads Up on Admission

Anonymous
For those who have or will have two or more children at an independent school, did/does your school give a heads-up regarding admission for DC2 -- meaning, if the application is on track or if the application isn't looking so good so *think about applying elsewhere as well*? Is it reasonable to expect? We're applying DC2 and we're wondering if it would be pushy to ask the AD while we still have time to do something about it if the decision is looking more like a maybe or a no. Nothing looks *iffy* from our perspective but we don't want to be naive and count our chickens.

This is interesting -- I would not even give a second thought as to whether or not DC2 would be accepted. I'm not being flip, but I would totally take it for granted. Unless your kid was a holy terror during the playdate, I can't imagine that you'd have anything to worry about.

I have been told by a consultant here that not all schools have a super-strong sibling policy, meaning at these schools it's not a slam dunk. She just said that in passing, since it's not relevant to us for years, so no names were specifically cited.

OP again. There is a sibling policy at DC1's school, but there are always more siblings (and other priority children) applying than there are spots. That's our concern.

The year my 2nd child applied as a sibling to one of the top 2, I set up a call with director of admissions to get a sense of the chances for admission. I waited until the scores and recommendations were in the file. We were told that the odds were good during that call, and our child was ultimately admitted.

Please define the "top 2". Not trying to be argumentative - I will be applying DC#2 as a sib to one of the "top 3" and am curious about the same thing.

At Sheridan they tell let the parents know at the play visit that all siblings are an automatic in. Current parents need to commit their deposit ahead of schedule. They also officially notify current parents in advance of the March letters.

Do you mean "all qualified siblings" or "all siblings" are an automatic in?

Love this--the "top 3" are no longer exclusive enough. What's the top 1?

The Top 1 is the school your child gets into, of course. The ones that rejected them are crap now unless you decide to go back the next year for another rejection.

I like the way it has gone from "big 3" to "top 3".

So, back to the topic. PP are you applying to other schools just in case? That's one solution, but I wonder how DC1's school will react to that, and other schools for that matter. The schools ask where you're applying on the application.

I will apply DC#2 to the school where DC#1 is for pre-k. If DC#2 is not accepted we'll stay at our preschool for another year then apply to several schools for K.

We did get a heads up when our DC2 had a rough play visit and was iffy for admission. DC2 was not admitted the first time, but did get in when we reapplied the next year.
