I didn’t like the speech at all. Overly promotional. And the call to action to check social media saying, “I’m going in the back and will post the album cover on Instagram” takes attention away from show performers.

Plus, we know she is not the one posting on social media. So don’t lie.

I like Taylor’s music. But the speech was bad. No one will tell her the truth though.

I thought is was classless because Miley had just been onstage excited to win her first Grammy and the first thing TS said was that it was her 13th.

Oh for God's sake. Taylor was happy for Miley and cheering her on. 13 is Taylor's birthday and her favorite number. The hater's gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate!

Miley seemed like a belligerent ass and I don’t appreciate her at all. Her flowers songs is mediocre at best.

Jay z is annoying. Beyoncé is not as great of an artist as Taylor. Sorry, but she’s not. Stop embarrassing your wife and stop cheating on her too. Scumbag.

To me she appears as someone who is living in the moment, taking it all in, and enjoying it all. Living in the moment is something that takes most decades and age to figure out. That was Oprah’s send off when she ended her talk show “live in the moment”.

And I’m not a Swiftie.

There is living in the moment and then there is immersing yourself in the main character role. Those are two different things. Just because you are in the moment, doesn’t mean you are so into yourself you don’t take anyone else’s feelings or reactions into account with your behavior.

Nicely put. At her core Taylor is childish and just something she will need to work on. It's hard to imagine she's only one year younger then Adele

Wow TIL I learned that Taylor is only a year younger than Adele and 3 years older than Miley Cyrus and yet both of those people seem like adults and Taylor... does not.

Stunted.

Miley seems like an adult to you? Interesting. I'm not dissing her, but I guess I see her as more ego-maniacal, self-absorbed, etc. but OK. ("I'm doing this so I can watch myself tomorrow and say I look good." And we're dissing Taylor Swift for being her own main character?) I'm a fan of her music though.

She strikes me as a lot more mature and self-possessed than Taylor. I was surprised to look up their ages and learn Taylor is older.

Those comments read to me as self-aware. She's making a joke about her vanity, in a room where probably a lot of people feel the same way -- they all put a ton of effort into their looks for these events, knowing they'll be photographed a lot and wanting to look good. It's honest and real to make that comment. The joke about underwear was similar to me -- just a joke acknowledging her history/proclivity for wearing very little clothing and a little levity. She did a video that was just her naked hanging on a wrecking ball -- no one familiar with Miley is scandalized by the news that she wasn't wearing skivvies under her outfits last night.

Miley just seems aware of what's going on, how she is perceived by others in the room and at home, and also aware of what other people might need or want to hear in the moment. I genuinely surprised me how much Taylor, who I've always thought of as being pretty savvy, really did not seem to get it.

Here's the part I found weird:

"I want to say thank you to member of the Recording Academy for voting this way, but I know that the way the Recording Academy voted is a direct reflection of the passion of the fans, so I want to say thank you to the fans for telling you a secret [new album announcement]."

I am aware that the weird wording is likely just because she wanted to plug the album and needed a way to segue from "I want to thank the academy" to the announcement. But when you actually listen to what she says in order to do that, it's rude!

She's saying that the academy is just voting for the album that is most popular with the public. The academy is made up of artists, producers, and technicians who work in the industry. This is not the People's Choice awards. Most academy members do NOT view themselves as just voting based on record sales or fanbase. These are people in the industry and while I'm sure they are subconsciously swayed by what is popular, they are voting based on who they really think deserves to be awarded. I bet if you asked most of the people who voted for Taylor why they did it, it's not because her fans are passionate. They would say it's based on their own professional assessment of which album in the category was most deserving.

Taylor's comment was kind of a slight against both the academy (whatever, you guys don't matter, you're just doing what the fans tell you they like best) as well as kind of a neg of everyone else in the category (you lost because you have fewer fans or your fans are less passionate, basically people like me more).

I don't think she meant it to come out that way, but it did, and is why maybe using that moment to promo her album was a mistake. It seems like a very weird misread of the situation from someone who has, uh, been to the Grammys a few times.

Where's your diatribe on Jay Z insulting the entire Grammy institution while also accepting an award, and going on a tirade about his 30-Grammy-award-winning wife not getting enough recognition?

It’s the 2024 redo of the Kanye moment. But since it’s directed at Taylor then no one gives a crap about him behaving badly.

This! I absolutely adore that she DGAF and she doesn’t have to either. She likes to sing and dance. She enjoys music so much and being around it, celebrating. People interpret this as attention seeking but I think she just enjoys it all. She’s giddy. Who cares how old she acts?! People pick apart every damn thing she does. I hope she keeps living the dream.

Look, I know I was long-winded above, but it wasn't a diatribe. I was just trying to articulate why those comments rubbed me the wrong way.

To be honest, I slept through Jay Z's speech but from what I heard about it, it did sound petty and annoying. I was just remarking on something I actually DID watch because it struck me at the time as pretty tone deaf.

Miley literally made a joke, on stage at the Grammys, about not wearing underwear. Something a 15 year old might find funny.

Nothing about Miley seems mature to me. But she’s entertaining, which is her primary job.

Adele has always had a more soulful, mature image than Miley and Taylor combined. No clue if she’s *actually* more mature, but that’s been her image from the start. Plus, she’s a mum, which has been known to be a maturity trigger for many of us - as in, pull our sh*t together in order to be present to raise a human being.

As for Taylor, she seems pretty age-appropriate given her life experiences. Her career has been her primary focus, with friendships, relationships, and cutting loose/stupidity only at the margins.

At 34, I was similar. Career was going great but was completely consuming. On the personal front, I was still stuck in cycles of single-dating-relationship-breakup-single-dating etc, with immature bouts of drama at every stage and occasional benders to blow off steam. I kept myself together most of the time … until I didn’t. I grew out of it soon after 34. Some of us are just late bloomers that way. 🤷‍♀️

Miley has absolutely been a "belligerent ass" in the past, but she wasn't last night. She is demonstrating some real -- dare I say it -- growth.

I like Flowers a lot and I really love how honest she is about how the song came about. Basically she wrote it as a sad sack love song about lost love, but decided to change it to an empowerment anthem even though she didn't actually feel that way. I just love how honest she is about it and it makes me like the song even more: https://www.marca.com/en/lifestyle/music/2023/05/19/64674bb546163f91578b4579.html

Yeah, usually when someone talks about living in the moment, I think of mindfulness. Taylor's behavior doesn't strike me as mindful or particularly in touch with her surroundings or what is going on. If anything, seems very checked out of the present moment and focused on her own stuff.

That's not even a criticism. I think awards shows are probably actually very boring and stressful for nominees. I wouldn't really expect someone to stay "in the moment." I think Taylor could have been more polite and self-aware, but I don't really blame her for not being very "present." I probably wouldn't be either.

From the little I’ve seen, she was up and singing the songs being performed. Living in the moment.

Did Taylor head to Vegas after the Grammys?

Agreed, I do wonder.

But she has a show in Tokyo on Wednesday night, which due to the time change is actually Wednesday morning Vegas time. So I'd actually be somewhat surprised if she went to Vegas last night because she presumably has to the in Tokyo tomorrow at the latest. I wouldn't be surprised if she's not already there.

She's going to perform in Tokyo first. Then she will be in Vegas. Try to keep up.
