Has anyone had cod blood banked publicly (no fee but you are donating the cord blood and don't retain ownership of it) at Sibley? My doctors at Foxhall gave me a brochure for private banking but said nothing about public banking . . . |
I'm delivering at Sibley and I'm seriously considering donating my baby's cord blood. There is a ton of information on the National Marrow Donor Program website (www.marrow.org). According to that site, Sibley does not work with a public bank, but you can still donate through Cyrobanks International. I just requested the enrollment kit through them at http://www.cryo-intl.com/enroll/donating/. Good luck! |
I successfully publicly banked from Sibley in April 2007 as part of a research study. Search the archives- I have posted the details previously. It was quite easy. |
At the Labor & Delivery class at Sibley I was told you could arrange to bank your cord blood privately, but they don't have a donation system in place. Apparently a larger hospital in the area that has more annual deliveries does. I've also been reading a lot lately about how the cord blood you might otherwise choose to bank can be useful to your baby NOW (at delivery), so it doesn't just otherwise go to waste if you don't bank it - it goes to your baby. That's not to say there aren't very good reasons to bank (privately or by donation) the cord blood - totally a personal choice based on personal circumstances. |
I did attempt public donation at Sibley 2 years ago using cyro. All went well, they sent me the kit, my OB practice (Reiter, Hill & Johnson) agreed to waive the doctor's fee (had to speak to RHJ's admin officer for this), and they extracted the cord blood. However, when my husband called cyro to arrange for pickup of the kit, they asked the weight of collected blood. The amount that the doctor extracted was apparently 20 grams or so below their minimum requirement (140 grams or something), so they said that they cannot use it. I was irritated since we went through all the hassle and cyro only said sorry but cant use it, please discard. There was no instructions to the doctor on the kit that specified this min weight requirement. |
PP- that's too bad. I guess my doc collected enough because Cryo took mine. They picked up the next morning from my room at Sibley. |
