Harmony looks interesting - a STEM school for younger kids? I like the idea. Looks like they might be open in time for this school year.

IF they can get building space...

IF they can translate Texas standards into Common Core Standards which DC has adopted...

IF they can get their act together to attract students via the common lottery...

Actually they are free as a charter to choose their curricula. Also, they are not required to do common lottery.

+1

IF you had attended the public board meeting, you'd know that Charter Schools are free to choose to be in the Common lottery.

They are free to choose their curricula but all students must take the new Common Core state assessments that are coming up next year (PARCC).

Hoping more language immersions crop up.

Based upon their results I am not too worried about it.

Which language(s) are you most hopeful for?

Spanish, French, Arabic, Mandarin. I'd take any of the four.

hope they don't do 'creationism' in science class

When will they start taking into account whether the DC student-age population can support another charter? Clearly, the charters are hurting DCPS schools - at some point (if not already), the proliferation of charters is going to hurt other charters.

Clearly there is plenty of demand for more high-quality options. When we get to the point where everyone gets into their first or second choice in the lottery I would say we have enough choices, but we're a long ways from that.

Whether new schools hurt existing schools is absolutely the wrong measure. For better or for worse DC has committed to school choice -- 75% of public school kids in DC don't go to their in-boundary DCPS school. If you spend five minutes reading this forum it's easy to see that school choice is a false hope. It's not a matter of parents having several good choices and making an informed decision between them. Rather, it's luck out in the lottery, or move or go private. School chance, not school choice.

Seriously?

People lined up a few days ago to get a chance to get into Yu Ying.

YY, MV and CM had 1000 people on their WL

Don't even get me started on the BASIS/Latin issue -

not so sure I'm interested in bringing Texas education standards to DC.

Don't we have enough Charter schools. I think the direction the current most popular schools should take or the board should direct is to expand them.
