Lost power for 8 hours and day old eggs

Anonymous
HI all. This is a two parter

1. We lost power for 8 hours last night. Food still good in fridge? Including milk, yogurt, and meat that was being defrosted?

2. Was planning to bake something last night but got tied up. Eggs expired yesterday. Had kind of figured it wasn't a big deal to use them today, but now that we lost power for 8 hours last night, would you use them or go out and buy some new ones?

Did you open the fridge at all? If not, I think category #1 would be fine. With respect to the eggs, do the float test. Out eggs in big bowl of water. If they float, they are bad.

I'd feed them to my husband and if he didn't get sick, then I'd feed them to the rest of the family.

It should all be fine, although the float test isn't a bad idea.

Eggs should be fine - they actually last for weeks (from date of laying) without refrigeration. But do the float test - it will tell you.

1. If you didn't open the door constantly, everything should be fine.

2. Almost certainly fine. They were one day expired, and a lot of countries don't even refrigerate their eggs. Unless what you're baking is chocolate mousse, I wouldn't be concerned.

Eggs are good for weeks after the date on the carton. They used to take the "expired" eggs off the store shelves and repackage them with new dates.

Other countries don't refrigerate eggs because they don't wash them like me do. It provides a protective covering. Totally different than what we do here and you can't rely on what they do as an indication as to what is safe since we wash our eggs.

Thanks all. Didn't open the fridge at all. Noticed the power was off when I woke up at 6am and DH fixed it at 8am. We just moved and it was hot here last night so we put on the AC in our room and DS' room. Must have blown the fuses or something.

Will do the float test. Thanks for the suggestion! Was excited about a dessert I was going to make with some freshly bought Dulce de Leche.
