Thoughts on Bowdoin?

Is this considered a popular destination for DMV kids? What's the experience like?

hmm...let's see..top 6 LAC....no, kids around here avoid it like the plague.

I do not agree one bit. Its a highly respectable school, small and somewhat isolated so the student has to want that kind of environment. We visited 6 LAC's in 3 days, Bowdoin, Amherst, Williams, Connecticut College, Bates and Trinity.

Bowdoin and Williams and Bates were a little too remote for my daughter but we were both impressed with the school.

Very impressive school. If your kid feels like it is a good fit (that is key!) then they won't regret it.

I have never once in my entire life thought about Bowdoin before I read this thread.

Its very small and rather isolated. A great school in terms of academics and I believe some strong sports teams but your child has to want to be in that kind of setting to be happy.

It is a strong school, not nearly as isolated as bates colby, williams or amhearst. 20 ins from portland. Not as good a rep as williams or middlebury butbstill a top tier lac.

Amherst has a lovely town filled with all kinds of shops, unique ethnic restaurants literally a few steps from campus. I would hardly call that isolated.

+1. Amherst is also part of a 5-college consortium with U Mass, Smith, Holyoak and Hampshire. There's lots going on in the area.

I'm not the PP you're responding to, but, as you venture into the college admissions process, I'd advise you to acquire a sense of humor.

Are you the same PP from the Davidson thread who has never once has met a Davidson alum? If not, the two of you should definitely meet in the land of provincialism and limited life-experience.

Totally agree! DC is at Amherst and loves it. And Amherst is Amtrak accesible. During breaks, friends from Yale and other schools on the line ride together.

Wow, snobby much? Perhaps those who who haven't heard of/aren't interested in schools such as Bowdoin and Davidson have other schools on their radar.

Any public school parent considering Bowdoin? It seems to me that most of these SLAC's are of little interest to the vast majority of high school grads in this area (those graduating from public schools), but private school parents seem to love them.

My guess is the first poster quoted here has no recent experience with college admissions. Like all too many of the folks posting on this forum, s/he is posting based on outdated perceptions from 20-30 years ago when most high school students only applied to schools in the region of the country where they grew up. Since then, travel has become more affordable, it's become easier to communicate with friends and family who are far away, and the Internet has enabled colleges to market themselves more effectively to students all across the country and around the world. This sure doesn't look like Kansas, Toto.
