E-mails lost in cyberspace

I think my e-mail (gmail) is failing me in my job search! I've had a few e-mails go unanswered in a way that really surprised me and, recently, I discovered that one such e-mail was never received, so now of course I am worried the same thing happened with the others. Anyone else have this happen? I am trying to avoid e-mail where possible but many would-be employers seem to prefer it.

I have not had this happen to me, and I use G-mail

surprisingly GMail is more reliable in not getting caught by spam.

I have an active grad school email address that looks much more clean, short, and professional but the problem is i have had emails sent from there be automatically re-routed to a person's spam box. Not sure why corporate spam filters would filter out ***.edu before a gmail address.
