newbie here -- do we need to rewire/upgrade electric? "crossed wires" issue

Anonymous
Two adjacent rooms in the upstairs of our house (built in 1940s) seem to have crossed wires -- for example, if the light is on in Room A and I then turn on the light in Room B, the light in Room A goes off (and vice-versa). Last night, the light in Room A went on seemingly all by itself (no one was even in Room B, and that light was off) -- though I think it happened when the central air turned on. So, as I'm new to all this homeowner stuff, can someone tell me if this means we need to look into rewiring? Thanks!

That doesn't look very encouraging. I'm pretty confident with doing small electric work myself, but probably wouldn't touch that but call a professional instead.

OP here -- I am not about to do any electrical work myself! I'm just wondering if this kind of thing means we will likely have to undertake a major rewiring project...

You should get it checked out ASAP. Electrical shorts start fires.

I'd go and flip the circuit breaker so the wire that run to those rooms don't energize.

Sounds like a miswired 3 way switch. It's an easy fix for an electrician. I'd call one. Unless its something more scary it shouldn't be $$$
