Why do you dislike law enforcement?

I will answer my own question - looks like it was ICE agents, not Newark PD. Not fair to lump all “law enforcement” together.

Well, we all know that ICE agents were probably hired by some podunk locality that doesn't do enough training,

Newark PD, on the other hand, has done a lot to reverse problems it used to have. My understanding is that they’ve done a good job with reforms and have a good relationship with Ras Baraka.

In Virginia both police and teachers participate in the Virginia Retirement System(VRS).

What really scares me is that qualified immunity essentially gives them power to do whatever they want and I will have very little recourse and to get any compensation would have an enormous opportunity cost.

I’m curious what benefits you think officers get that teachers don’t. I’m in LE and have friends who are teachers in my city and our packets are quite similar. Police pensions and teacher pensions have been done away with for new hires, but I will receive a pension and my teacher friends will, too. But neither new hires colleagues of ours will. Other than that, we receive the same insurance benefits, and the teachers actually receive more paid time off.

If everyone hates the cops and wants them disbanded, then why do they keep calling them? It’s true what a PP said, that there are often multiple calls every minute. Why, if everyone hates the resource, do they keep utilizing it? What do you do when you have the need for a police officer, and what is your alternative solution?

They can't answer this. When their kid get beat up they call the police. When their wife has a stroke the police show up. When there is a suspicious person on their ring camera they call the police.

In my experience, cops have never helped when I needed help and have caused me unnecessary problems just because they could.

At best police are a nuisance.
At worst, they are an occupying enemy force.
Either extreme, they are not needed anymore. Probably never were.

I have a family member who is staunchly anti-police. They attend any anti-police event they can find. They also proudly bragged about calling the police to investigate fireworks on the Fourth of July that woke their sleeping children. They proudly bragged about calling the police when one of their neighbors left them a note about parking. It’s like, pick a lane.

When there is an emergency most people's instinctive reaction is to call the police for help.
Those that are strongly anti-law enforcement should not [u]then call the police for help. Doing so only reveals their hypocrisy.
I personally am grateful for our local law enforcement and the literally thousands of issues that they deal with that keep our community safe.

As a citizen, I want the police to protect and serve the community. I want them to be properly funded. I want them to not kill people when it is not justified. I want them to demonstrate an ability to do their jobs without unfairly harassing and beating people.

Yes, it is a hard job. I don't "hate the cops" but I do want bad/illegal behavior to be rooted out of the system.

As a LEO, I can assure you those officers are dismissed, at least at my department and the departments I’m familiar with.

Also, the great majority of us don’t ever want to kill anyone, or even hurt anyone. In fact, that’s the very last thing we ever want to do. The legal implications, the social implications to our family and friends and our psyche are huge. I have friends who have had to rightfully kill someone while protecting others and it’s not something they’ve ever gotten over.
