WTH?

He got rid of 18F, the entity that built the direct file software. He hasn’t gotten rid of the software itself.

How "efficient". Does that mean that Direct File will not exist next year, as no one will be around to update it with any and all tax changes then?

I have no idea. I’m not defending him, either, to be clear.

No, I didn't mean you were, and I appreciate your clarification. Musk is supposed to be a software guy - he fired a lot of the programmers at Twitter and now it doesn't work very well anymore. Now he's dong that to the USG? That's bad. It's not efficient or a good idea.

Why aren't the other billionaires and oligarchs complaining that Musk has sole access to this information?

Direct File's not the first time, nor will it be the last, that IRS wastes IT money on a political football everyone at IRS knows will be dead when party control flips.

Meanwhile, the systems that run the Service are in Assembler and COBOL.

That means we have some protection against Musk and his band of interns!

COBOL and cursive are our secret weapons.

Of course they are. I worked on the Y2K problem in COBOL. Mainframes can handle huge amounts of data.

He’s not a software guy. He’s a rich guy who is ruthless and saw an opportunity in the clean energy sector and stole someone’s idea (Tesla). He’s a marketing guy, that’s it.

I wish people would stop ascribing anything remotely competent to this bozo. Remember the Thai soccer team?

They’re waiting for him to tank the economy and each will scoop up their portions dirt cheap.

He’s working on behalf of a technocult that is trying to tank the dollar and destabilize the globe.
So there are literally 2 cults working to dismantle democracy.
Musk’s crew and the Christian Nationalists.

Honestly the Jesus freaks scare me way less.

How are Musk and/or his minions accessing, controlling, manipulating or doing anything anywhere when AFAIK Doge is not an agency with an enabling act or authority or hierarchy, and at least minion-level personnel have to be hired pursuant to the Civil Service Act?

And these billionaires aren’t waiting on social security checks ….

You know what? Everyone gets what they deserve. I do not care if I lose in this mess either. People are going to learn about following evil and embracing racist, sexist and misogynist ideologies. I want to sit back and watch all the suffering because this country has earned a good beating. I have dual-citizenship and will retreat to my family’s native country if things get a bit hairy for me. Good luck with Agent Orange.

I've never rabidly hated Musk nor particularly liked him. He's better seen as just a rich guy who created some cool companies staffed with people who succeeded in spite of and not because of him, because they were passionate about EV's, rockets or whatever.
