New on this forum, aren't you? The SB sold the property adjacent to Carson--which was intended for the new high school. It would have made sense--but then, it would have been difficult to continue to send Carson students to South Lakes and Oakton. Wonder if that had anything to do with the decision.

This poster seems to be suggesting something different. Forget about co-locating a new high school with RC. Make RC a HS and instead build a new middle school somewhere.

But,that does not solve the problem of where to find the property. That is also the problem of where to put the high school.

Carson was not a particularly good location for a middle school--Franklin is extremely close to it. 1.6 miles by road, less as the crow flies.

Yes, which is why it makes sense to turn it into the high school and build a middle school in Oakton, Oak Hill, or Reston. Buy a horse farm or something.

What horse farms? All three of those areas are packed to the gills with SFHs, THs, and apartments.

We would just pupil place or leave the county entirely. We have no interest in our kids being guinea pigs to make IB programs we never wanted look better.

Maybe you would write better if you had gone through an IB Program PP.

The irony of this post makes me laugh.

First, Carson is located less than a mile from the Oak Hill post office. I don't think any students who attend Carson live in Reston or Oakton. Maybe, PP is thinking of those rural areas along Vale in Wolf Trap/Vienna area? That would certainly be a terrible location for a school--high or middle. Or, maybe PP thinks that we should get rid of Frying Pan Park--one of the treasures of Western Fairfax.

Regarding an expansion of McLean so that students wouldn’t have to cross 123 or Georgetown Pike to get to Langley; it seems to me that a pedestrian traffic light or even better a foot bridge over those roads would be less expensive than a McLean expansion.

It wouldn’t negate the need for McLean to get some renovations/repairs.

Vale Road is not in the Wolftrap part of Vienna. It’s further west towards (and in) Oakton, whereas the Wolftrap area is further north.

I’m convinced the entire idea of a new western HS should be permanently scrapped. Clearly people will continue to find ways to undermine the idea indefinitely. Instead, turn all the schools in western Fairfax into big 3000-3200 student facilities like Westfield was at its peak and then no one needs to worry about getting moved out of their current schools. And then start engaging in some serious planning about how all the money that would otherwise be needed for a new HS can be spent instead.

They don't live there, but there is a section, I think Fox Mill Estates, where the kids go to Carson and then up to South Lakes.

No one in those areas of McLean is going to allow a foot bridge over 123 or Georgetown Pike to get built. And there are already traffic lights at different spots on 123 and 193, but you’d need to add a bunch of other infrastructure that some homeowners would oppose to make a path from the south side of 123 to LHS walkable.

Conversely, there will be less opposition from locals whenever FCPS gets around to a permanent expansion of McLean because that’s not really changing the footprint so much as replacing the cheap trailers and a modular with permanent space.

The funds for school construction come from bonds--and the bonds-as far as I can recall--always pass. That money would not be used for education. However, when these bonds pass and don't solve the problem (see W Potomac/ Mount Vernon), it would seem to be quite wasteful. And, Fairfax County owns the debt.

I guess, though, that, the money to resource materials, etc, does come from our budget.

But, right now, the SB could use whatever common sense exists there and reallocate funds to instruction instead of "equity." Has it ever occurred to them that "equity" might become narrower if they spent money on instruction in academics instead of social justice?

And, now we have a new set of Gatehouse keepers. How much is a new region going to cost? New Chief of Schools? etc. It is not just the salaries of these individuals, it is also their staffs, staff benefits, and offices, etc. The new organization is likely in millions per year. Think what a million dollars could do in tutoring? Materials for teachers. Aides.

cont. I think I also read that there has been additional staff added to the School Board.

How about if the SB quit challenging the judgments and suits on special education, TJ, etc? How much money could that save?

Okay--but where would you suggest a school on Vale Road--remember Carson students do not LIVE in Oakton.

I didn’t suggest a school on Vale Road. Just thought it was weird that you purported to correct a PP’s geography but in the process misidentified where Vale is located.

PP mentioned horse farms. Except for Frying Pan Park, I doubt there are any horses in Carson boundary.
