I'll be traveling through Gaithersburg this weekend and staying at a hotel in Washingtonian Center. Are there any restaurants worth checking out, or mostly just the chains? Business travel, so I'll be alone and don't really want to venture out of the area if I don't have to. |
Copper Canyon and Guapo's are not awful. But not special, by far.
There is lots of great ethnic food in Gaithersburg. You might want to search Yelp or Chowhound. |
I also like cafe deluxe, it's as all local chain. Tasty, all purse menu. |
Purpose, not purse! |
Definitely go to Taco Bar at the gas station. http://www.tacobarwashingtonian.com/. Best place within walking distance by far. Read the reviews anywhere online.
If you want to sit outside somewhere more inviting, Guapos is the best choice. I went to the Peri Peri place for the first time recently and really enjoyed it, but my single experience there may not be worth much. Cafe Deluxe is fine, but nothing exciting. I've found Copper Canyon to be overpriced and inconsistent. If you want something different to do this weekend, go to the Montgomery County Fair. You'll have to drive there, but it will only take you 5-10 min. I'm not really into the rides, but love the agricultural part. And, if you do decide to drive a few minutes away for food, I'd recommend Minerva for Indian, Moby Dick's for kabobs, Mamma Lucia for pizza, and Cava for Greek mezze. |
The Fallsgrove location for Moby Dick's, I meant to mention. The other Gaithersburg one in the Kentlands is a further drive. |
Oh, there's also Dogfish Head. The food is average but the beer is awesome! |
Where did you end up going, OP? |
Thanks - ended up at Cafe Deluxe and was disappointed by the food. Atmosphere and service were good. Seemed to be the best option without leaving the area. Was going to do Guapos, but wanted to sit outside and there was an overly loud band playing right outside.
I'll be back to the area soon and will check out some of the others! |
Sorry it was kind of a bust, OP. if you like wine, the next time you're headed there check the finewine.com website to see if they have any tastings or a Friday Flight Night scheduled that weekend. |
Beware of the Taco Bar - I got the worst food poisoning of my life there - lasted 8 days! |
