My LO will be turning one soon and is allergic to dairy and soy. Any suggestions for a bakery (or individual) who makes dairy and soy free birthday cake? I'm okay with getting a regular cake for the guests, but I would love to serve him a little bit of cake. |
We've been dairy and soy free for several years ![]() People are quick to suggest Sticky Fingers Bakery, but hey use soy in almost all of their cakes and all of their icings contain soy. If you don't mind baking from scratch, you can make any cake dairy/soy free. Just use Earth Balance Soy Free spread or coconut oil in place of butter and plain coconut milk if it calls for milk. This chocolate cake is awesome: http://www.womansday.com/_mobile/recipefinder/the-very-best-chocolate-cake-recipe-122341 I think I use 1/2 C soy-free spread and 1/2 C coconut oil in place of butter. I use olive oil instead of vegetable oil I've made this frosting several times and no one knows it doesn't have real butter in it!: http://dairyfreecooking.about.com/od/sweetsaucesfrostings/r/chocfrost.htm Definitely use the Dutch processed cocoa for both. |
Angle food cake egg whites, flour, lime, sugar and vinilla. Lots of cake do not have dairy(butter can be sub) or soy, but frosting does(ie cream, butter, or cream cheese) |
My friend uses Wacky cake recipes, e.g.,:

Here's another recipe for chocolate cake and frosting: http://chefchloe.com/sweets/chocolate-layer-cake.html
When it asks for non-dairy milk in the frosting, just use almond, rice, or coconut milk instead of soy milk. Good luck! |
We've also had good luck with flax milk and hemp milk. Hemp milk and coconut milk in particular have a higher fat content, so things come out creamier. |
try talking to shalom's kosher or koshermart in rockville. Their in-house baked goods are dairy free (by definition), and I'm sure they could direct you to soy-free, if they have it. I have personally always had great service from Shaloms (they just moved to the old Magruders? site in kemp mill) |
The arrowhead organic chocolate cake mix is great from whole foods. I use that mix to make cupcakes. It is soy free. To make it dairy free, use water instead of milk. On the back of the box,it gives you the alternative options. I use canola oil instead of vegetable soybean oil. It s mostly abt substitution. And guess what? It still tastes great ![]() http://handychickadee.blogspot.com/2013/02/soy-free-treat-ideas.html |
Does it have to be cake? Tonight I made pumpkin muffins without any dairy (2 eggs but you can substitute) or soy. I usually do a vegan vanilla-lime cream cheese frosting to make them more of a cupcake for birthdays and such. They're pretty amazing.

The Happy Tart Bakery in Del Ray. Delish! |
Namaste mixes are all soy and dairy free - plus their brownie mix is the best! |
We had a kid with allergies to dairy, soy and more (which at 3.5 he has thankfully outgrown). I never could find any baker to make cakes, and I am hopeless in the kitchen. But I ended up using Cherrybrook Kitchen mix from Whole Foods.

great advice to all. actually, dairy and soy free baked goods are pretty easy. egg-free and gluten-free tend to be the bigger challenges. and it is tastier (in my opinion) to do dairy-free chocolate than white/yellow cake. you can special order a dairy-free soy-free cake from whole foods but...we've found their cakes to be hit or miss. |
The bakery at the Amish Market in Laurel will make such cakes. They made the best soy free, dairy free, gluten free cake that I had ever tasted. |
This website has some really yummy allergy-friendly recipes:
