Where to stay in Amsterdam

I'm going to Amsterdam for a conference this summer and my family will join me afterwards. Can anyone recommend a good place to stay? I was there years ago but haven't been there recently, and never with my family. Thanks!

We stayed here 3 years ago and LOVED it. I know the name doesn't scream authentic (The American) but it's the real deal, a historic building constructed I think in 1900, great location, etc. We got a suite with a sitting room overlooking a canal and I basically wanted to just live there forever.

Have a great time, btw. Amsterdam is one of my favorite cities in the world.

Hotel Pulitzer - love it. Expensive but very worth it. Restored century-old canal houses with modern amenities and luxuries. Near everything.
