For those of you who've lost a job between 2010-2013

Anonymous
How long did it take you to find another one? I'm going on 6 months after getting laid off and it feels like I'll never get another job, ugh!

DH took about 3 months but he has a PhD in a highly marketable field. We did have to relocate to his new job site. It took me about a year to find a job in the same area.

If you are able move for work I would strongly encourage you to really expand the geography of your search.

Op, what is your field and what tactics are you using in your job search? Perhaps we can suggest other avenues to help you.

4 weeks in 2010, but I took a tremendous paycut.

6 months in 2010 and I took a 10% pay cut. In the end, I only found my current job through a personal (not even a professional) referral. This was someone I knew from a social activity who had a job that I qualified for. All of the jobs that I had applied for without the networking tie were a bust.

Public Health, I've tried networking with former coworkers, I use LinkedIn, indeed, Washington Post, Craigslist, USA jobs, and even company websites. I've even applied for jobs outside of my field, but was turned down for lack of experience.

18 months, 10% pay cut, new job is not where my career should be headed but the ONLY one I could find.

Best of luck to you. Stay confident that you will rebound.

Check out Idealist if you are in public health. I believe I saw some recent postings in health fields.

Have you used Public Health Employment Connection by Emory University, and publichealthjobs.net which is run by ASPH? There's also the APHA "CareerMart" but I have rarely found anything on there. PHEC however is a great site, I have found a couple of my previous positions from there.

What "industry" (or maybe you're looking in all), like research, health departments/govt, consulting, non-profit?

Also what concentration of public health is your experience in, if any, like health science, health policy, health systems, population/community health, epidemiology?

For now, I'm looking in all industries, but I would prefer a health department. My experience is in population health and epidemiology. I have tried APHA with no luck, but I will look into PHEC.

dchr.dc.gov had some postings for the DC DOH recently. Definitely check out Idealist as well.

I've been underemployed for 5 years now OP and am 57 years old. I've applied to tons of jobs and am just not getting anything else. Good luck! I hope you find something good.

11:56 here - would you also be willing to share how many years of experience you have? Any particular skills (research methods, SAS/STATA/R etc, grant writing)?

I have worked in a couple health departments in my time and believe that's where my heart is as well. I am currently in the private sector and looking to possibly get out, but I must say that it will be tough to get into certain LHDs because of the extreme constraints on budgets. I often see many postings for the VA State Dept of Health in Richmond (not sure if you're willing to relocate) and I'm not sure if that's a good or bad sign.

PHEC is an absolute must for any public health job seeker, check it out ASAP. I also like to go directly to the county health dept's website (e.g., Arlington, Montgomery, Fairfax - depending where you wish to work and where you live) and see what they have listed there.
