I have to believe some of these are trolls. I canât fathom adults being so insecure. Anyone in the real world knows that âprestigeâ only takes someone so far. I feel for the kids whose parents see the kidsâ colleges as an extension of the parents. |
I think the craziness of the college admission process is also a symptom of something bigger; the UMC knows that their kids will have to work twice as hard to even maintain the same standard of living. A lot of people believe a T20 education helps. Iâm more of a pessimist given the current state of affairs (this administration, Project 2025, climate change, techno bros wanting to reshape the world). |
And this is why people think DCUM is toxic. |

+1 We technically have the money to send our three kids to these $95K/year schools, but we would really feel it. We would sacrifice to pay for HYPPSM, but these NESCACs and the like just aren't worth it to us. The career outcomes aren't the same. I could see how it's worth it to families with more money or if they could quality for FA though. We have some very good in-State schools or our kids can chase merit. |
| I always see these threads as opportunities for those who canât afford these tuitions to make themselves feel better. |
I went to Wake Forest. My parents were happy to pay. But if money were an issue, I could have gone to UNC and done just fine. Not everyone is so lucky to live in a state with an excellent flagship. |
I donât think itâs toxic point out that most private colleges are not worth what they charge. Having enough money that you donât care if you are overcharged is not the same thing as âworth it.â |
| There are Georgia parents who send their kids to Emory. Emory is not GA Tech which is not UGA. Not anyoneâs place to judge if the family can afford it. |
| Tulane, BC, Wake not worth the money. Emory is way above those 3. |
Places like Wake Forest, Davidson, Richmond, etc. also used to cost $25k/year all in. The cost has increased dramatically relative to incomes. |
Every one is allowed to make a determination if something is âworth it.â I am wealthy and choose not to purchase many things I donât think are âworth it.â It is a valid point of view, even if others disagree. |
| Davidson is worth it but BC and Wake no way. |
PP here. Thanks for saying this. I feel bad that DC had to turn down some of these schools. |
Donât feel bad. We can afford private tuition but I donât want my kids at college with the kids of the elitists on this forum. Imagine looking down your nose at Michigan or UVA or Tech or UMD! |
