The PD video teachers must watch on Monday

Anonymous
I guess mcps equates Rosa Parks sitting quietly on the front of the bus and drinking quietly out of a water fountain to kids cussing out and attacking the teachers and peers. I wonder if the sexual assaults and racist graffiti are looked at in the same sympathetic light.

Teachers are the ones who are nonrenewed for reporting- which is our jobs as mandatory reporters. It's funny how admin doesn't abide by the reporting rules and they get promoted.

It is insulting not only to teachers but to the civil rights figures they're citing.

I’m a parent and not a teacher, but if I were a teacher I would feel insulted and disrespected that this is what my school district is trying to pass off as professional development. This is abysmal.

Monifa has no shame.

Please share your definition of the word "communist".

You must have been stuck with a troublemaker disrupting your English and History classes.

If you watched that video and you missed the communist/socialist undertones, then I’m not going to do your critical thinking for you. But it wasn’t even disguised. She literally said education is political work.

Weird, I thought the video was fine. I didn't see any of this conspiracy nonsense. You should probably put down the crack pipe.

Telling people that they are smoking crack as an insult is anti-mental health, and coated in shame language which brings harm to those who struggle with substance use. Not to mention, it's a form of cyberbullying.

Dr. Shalaby would not approve of this kind of rhetoric or behaving in her classroom. Mind your words.

Although they were harsh, I agree with the earlier poster. The person they were responding to claimed this video is communist indoctrination which seems ridiculous and more like something you'd hear on Fox news.

I'm so glad that I left education. Teachers can't continue to take the blame for everything. Behaviors are out of control in schools and now they're suggesting we tell kids to organize themselves (rather than line up) or mind their bodies (rather than don't hit). I can't see how anyone would want to teach in this school system any longer.

^this!

...because, as is typical, this "racist" accusation is hurled at anyone with an opposing view. It's a boring response to any "conservative" or middle-of-the-road view aimed at supporting censorship by a rigid, punitive academic culture. If someone doesn't agree with his colleagues or dares to depart from left-wing orthodoxy, he is insulted rather than engaged in discussion (but wait, shouldn't we all feel "safe" to engage in discourse -- hahaha). Your comment serves to perpetuate hate with your racist accusation. As a non-white, I found PD insulting and find that I grow tired of comments that further divide the community. Your comment is everything that is wrong with diversity training. People like you miss the intent to create respectful dialogue and discourage any thought that doesn't align with your view.

If they're just pushing bigotry and hate, they deserve to be insulted and ignored.

Good job illustrating the PP’s point about blocking the chance to create respectful dialogue, ironically with your own bigotry and hate I suspect.

So you didn't actually watch yourself but you commented based on you gossiping about "prominent complainers" who "according to" other teachers are "KNOWN" racists? Okay. It might be a good idea to stay out of the conversation if you haven't actually watched and formed your own opinion. Your talk with teachers is frowned upon per our MCPS training during preservice. Go back and read your modules. Respect. Tolerance for others' views. And all that.

Agree with the PP, when dealing with hate-mongers and bigots, the dialog isn't respectful. You don't need to respect their right to bigotry. They should be shunned and ignored.

Twice this week I was hit and kicked by a second grade student. Admin tried calling home multiple times both days and nobody would answer the phone or reply to emails and Remind messages that had been sent. The student is a walker with older siblings and a note was sent home with the high school sibling who picks them up in front of the school. Absolutely nothing but crickets. Due to his age, you can't really suspend him so now I just get to wait each day for the latest meltdown and potential attack. My principal wasn't allowed to suspend the student because of their age. Welcome to MCPS everyone! It's an absolute shit show.

PP here...the point of my message above being that the Oct 9th PD was the biggest waste of my time. I'm AA and while I believe we need to always take a student-centered approach, we can't allow students to assault staff and other students just because they could be our "canaries in the coal mines" telling us what WE need to fix for them. How about we teach ALL students what is and is not acceptable in schools with some basic non-negotiables. Central office has no clue what's happening in schools any more. I know a few who took those jobs so that they could get out of the chaos inside of school buildings.

Teachers are speaking out. It would help if parents stood in solidarity.

You seem a little unhinged. You may want to find a new hobby.

If only they had kid prisons for these students.

Except the problem is “bigotry” is now defined as “a statement I don’t think I agree with or I’m going to interpret out of context. I’m not going to make any effort at all to find out because that takes a millisecond of effort on my part and I’m lazy.”
