McDonald's

I see a family that eats/makes available/buys McDonald's food for dinner practically every day. They have at least two kids (boys, aged 3ish and about 7 or so). While I'm waiting for my son to finish an afterschool program, I wait in the McDonald's parking lot for him. EVERY week day, either the mom or dad of the family brings the boys to the McDonald's and when they come out they have some variation of the same things...Happy Meal boxes, sometimes ice cream too or smoothies.

I am honestly not judging, though it's not a choice I make for my family, and realize that there could be any number of reasons why they do it. I'm not in their shoes...I believe that most people do the best they can with the information that they have at hand.

So, anyway, I have been pondering the whole situation in my head for a few weeks now and have an honest question:

What, if any, kind of long term impact this will have on the kids involved (two boys, aged 3ish and 7) if they eat McDonald's every week day (at least) for an entire school year or longer, but then stop and start eating it on a more occasional basis?

But you are judging my friend.

You honestly are judging.

But, I'm not. I honestly am wondering if it's that big of a deal to eat that much McDonald's. Seriously. Nothing more, nothing less.

I adore McDonald's, eat it a few times a month. But every single day? That's insane. What OP describes is awful. Way too unhealthy for children. I disagree that they don't know better. They deserve judgment.

They don't. OP do you want someone watching what you eat everyday? Are you a pillar of health? If not then please reserve your honest curiosity for yourself.

"Supersize Me"?

No, I'm not the pillar of health. I eat fast food, cakes, cookies, ice cream, you name it. I made an observation and have an honest question.

What's your issue with that 16:10? Are you part of the family I see?

Watch Supersize Me or read the book. Basically McDonalds every day leads to weight gain and tons of weight related health problems.

Signed, mom who believes in everything in moderation and does McDonalds approx 1 a month.

It's obviously not good for them, but I don't think they're going to die from it anytime soon.

You don't know what exactly they're eating--are they getting apple slices instead of fries? Milk instead of soda? They could very well be making their Happy Meals at least a little more healthy (or less unhealthy).

I worked at McDonald's in high school, so I ate McD's several times a week for a year. I don't know what those kids eat at other meals or how active they are, but frankly, I'd say that the effects of eating McD's (I never noticed any at the time) disappear when you're not eating it anymore. I didn't gain weight or have any health issues at the time. When I stopped working there and McD's was reduced to a "sometimes food," as Cookie Monster says, I didn't experience any lingering effects.

The real problem is that the kids may or may not be learning to appreciate healthy foods and well-balanced meals. It's not healthy for kids to eat that way, but they aren't necessarily doomed to a life of obesity and ill health if it's just a temporary diet rather than a way of life.

Yeah, you're judging. But that's human and normal, and it's okay.

It's gross that the kids are eating McDonald's on a daily basis.

In "Supersize Me," Morgan Spurlock didn't eat ANYTHING but McDonald's, said yes every time they offered to supersize his meal, and then actually ate it all.

As far as these kids you're observing, you don't know what else they're eating, and you're assuming they're actually eating those happy meals.

My daughter ALWAYS asks for a Happymeal -- because she wants the toy. When we get her one, she typically eats half the fries and drinks the apple juice and that's it. She doesn't like the nuggets unless she's really hungry and there's nothing else available; if I order a burger for her and cut it into fourths, she might eat two of them (so, half the burger).

Then, when we get home, she says she's hungry, and when I offer slightly healthier options like carrot sticks w/ranch dip, she's all over them.

I see a woman who sits in a McDonald's parking lot everyday passing judgement on strangers who eat there even though it is none of her business and has absolutely no effect on her life. She then proceeds to post about it on DCUM.

I am honestly not judging, though to do this is not a choice I make for my family, because I realize I am not a perfect parent, I do not have a perfect family, and I should simple live and let live.

So, anyway I have been pondering the whole situation and now I have an honest question:

What, if any, kind of long term impact will it have on this woman's kids when they realize that their Mom is a judgmental busybody?
